Mystery Island

Chapter 26

When our feet touched the hard coral, it was a huge relief. We’d swum more quickly than needed to, but I had a deep panic born of shark movies from my youth. The desperation of being stuck out in the ocean, with a host of predators below did nothing to slow me down. I hated to think I represented a seal in trouble, and a victim for a tiger shark.

“I can’t believe he left us,” Donna said, flippers off and already pulling off her air tank, and then with one hand tried unzipping her wetsuit.

“He must’ve seen something,” I replied. “He did say he’d leave us if someone got wind we were out here.”

She turned to me, the white salt residue around her lips, “Yes, but I never thought he actually would! He probably went the minute we hit the water.”

I remained quiet. Arguing was pointless.

Ahead of us I could see a wooden jetty. It was fairly new, and looked like it could withstand anything nature threw at it. There were two boats moored. One was huge and dominant, and the other more modest.

“At least we should be able to get a lift back to shore,” I said pointing to them.

Our feet were now on the sand, and to the side of us were some large rocks leading to a cliff-face. But prominently, was a sign that read, ‘Private Property – Keep Out’.

We took our tanks, masks and flippers, and placed them under the jetty. Then we pulled off our wetsuits, and I grabbed the bag.

“At least he left us our clothes,” I said pulling our things out.

Donna scrunched her hair to get some of the water out, and then ran her fingers through it. She’d be moaning anytime soon that it was ruining it, and was going to go curly, but I liked it like that. It was a natural beauty.

She pulled on her vest, and stepped into her shorts. I pulled on my T-shirt and cargo shorts, already making them wet. The sun was hot so we’d eventually get dry.

For a second, I looked out into the vast ocean from where we came. I was full of relief, excitement whilst being exhausted from the swim.

“We found something,” she said. “Where no one else has looked.” And for the first time I struggled to read her face. Perhaps she was unsure of how she felt too. It was a strange moment. The first in our relationship, in fact. I was going to kiss her, and yet, I felt too nervous to do so. Somehow, through the excitement and nervousness of this whole trip, something had happened. The uncertainty, and the expectation of it all, we’d both unknowingly taken a half-step back. And that was the weird thing. If this was a wet Sunday afternoon in England, sat in our small house, she’d take my hand and lead me upstairs. We’d shed our clothes and enjoy each other’s bodies without the need for words. Breathless and followed by pleasurable gasps.
