Chapter 11

Jewels? Eggs?

As we sped upwards on the path, I knew it was time for Dino to take us back to our modern time. I felt for him, but couldn’t find him. There was no time to stop and search more. The crunching and panting behind us increased. The soldiers were following very fast. Was the attendant coming, too, to take Rita away with her? I looked around desperately. Where could we go to get away from them? I looked to each side. Down low to the left was a dark shadow in the hillside. A cave?

“Go over there,” I yelled.

Bushes and rocks seemed determined to block our way, but all four of us managed to slide down about ten feet to reach the cave. We landed in front of its opening. Hopefully, we could hide in there. I hurriedly picked up a stick and slashed at several spider webs covering the entrance. Nothing was going to stop me. Two lizards dashed into nearby cracks. A beetle and some tiny bugs scurried out of the hole.

I peered into the dark and musky smelling opening. Logan grabbed my shoe and stopped me. “Scorpions and snakes, remember? Don’t go farther. We can’t go in there.”

I was relieved. I backed out. How would we get away from here?

“Listen. Water running?” Ranjit breathed heavily beside me.

Even though tall bamboo shoots near us swayed and rustled, I barely heard gurgling water and spied a narrow stream. A shout came from the men chasing us. Did they see us come this way? Could we jump the water?

I dodged behind a tree, yanking Logan with me. “I’d ask Dino to get us away magically, but I must have dropped him.” I started to cry.

“Say wish anyway,” Logan urged.

Would that help or did I have to hold him? In desperation, I gasped out, “Dino, I wish we’d get back to our own times.”

The dark cloud came racing through the tree branches and immediately we were surrounded. It was a little frightening, but this time everyone knew what was happening. None of us were actually afraid, but we stood absolutely still, waiting. No one spoke. The wind picked up. It became blacker than last time. Then, relief. Light crept in from the edges and the cloud disappeared.

I looked down at my clothes. We were back to our own times! Rita rubbed her arm where the woman had grabbed her while Logan twirled around in his happy dance. Ranjit, though, gave a snort and shook his head. He stomped over to me and glared at me. “Okay, I’m not waiting any longer. How did you bring us here? We’re friends, aren’t we? You have secret magic. Why won’t you explain it to us?”

Rita moved beside him and said, “It’s not fair to Ranjit and me. Please, tell us more about your powers. The magic is wonderful, but can you not tell us how you do it?”

Logan tugged on my arm. “They’re really mad. Tell them.”

I turned my back on them and grabbed his shoulders.
