CHAPTER SIX

WAS he drunk, Sam wondered, or was it the summer night that made him want to leap and spin about in some crazy dance? Strolling the uneven streets beside Ellie O’Dea, he pretended to catch his shoe, and lingered back a step to drink in the radiance of her heavy fall of hair, the subtle sway of her taut little edible behind.

The image of her moonlit shape on the hotel balcony rushed back to him with its erotic power, and his blood stirred with the old enchantment. She cast him back an enquiring smile, a sparkle in her eyes as if she guessed his small subterfuge. He grinned and caught her up again. The chemistry was magic, he thought with escalating excitement, but still he sensed a tension in her, a restraint.

How did she manage to remain so elusive? He could gaze into those clear, smiling eyes till he drowned, but why did it feel as if she were still wearing her mask? Since the first, every step he took with her was a tread on eggshells. Any false move, and she might vanish into the night as easily as she’d slipped through his fingers on that fateful dawn.

They reached the entrance to the car park and he used his security key to unlock the street door. Despite their renovation, the fishy harbour smell still permeated the dank walls of the old cellars, and rose to greet him as they descended to the lower floor. The few other cars parked there earlier had departed, and only the Porsche remained. Their steps echoed in the empty place.

They reached the shadowy alcove where the car was parked, and stopped to face each other. In the sudden silence and isolation, Sam felt an urgency to break through the constraints. They’d been lovers once. They would be again. Why pretend?

He scanned her face and said, his voice catching with the force of his desire, ‘Do you know how much I want you?’

In the shadowy light uncertainty swirled in her eyes as she searched his face. After a heartbeat’s hesitation she said, ‘No—yes. Perhaps.’

‘Do you ever tell the truth?’ In mock frustration, he wound a swathe of her hair around his hand, held it to his face and inhaled its honeyed scent. The intoxication of it, the memories it evoked, flooded him with lust, and he groaned. In his urgent need to pin her down he took her smooth, satin arms in his hands. ‘You do know. We both know. Tell the truth. You haven’t forgotten what it was like that night! You still want me!’

His passionate conviction swept Ellie along on a giddy, irresistible tide. With her pulse thundering in her ears, she confessed tremulously, ‘No, Sam, I haven’t forgotten. I want you.’

He held her a little closer. His deep voice, his dark eyes, were compelling. ‘And we’ll always be honest with each other. Lovers without lies. Do you agree?’

Lovers. On his tongue the word had such thrilling connotations she felt as if she’d been transported to some magic realm where everything was possible.
