I set the table while Alex cooked. I don’t know where he learned to do it, but he was an excellent cook. We got a full salmon, which he cooked to perfection along with copious asparagus, feta, and lemon orzo. Sandra insisted on at least getting the wine and had a bottle of red breathing on the table with a bottle of white in the fridge.

“How was your day?” I asked. I just wanted to hold and kiss her hand. I wanted to taste her fingers. I wondered if she’d thought about us after we’d gone, if she’d thought deeply about us perhaps while she was in the shower.

Alex and I had promised each other that we would be gentlemen tonight. Sex might be seen as pressuring her, trying to sway her. This was something she had to decide on her own. We were going to be chaste and the height of respectful. It didn’t stop the semi from trying to form in my trousers when I looked at the dress she was wearing: dark purple, form-fitting over those luscious curves, and ending just at her knees. She was barefoot, and as she stood in the kitchen while Alex plated the food, pouring us each a glass of wine, I fantasized about this being how we spent every evening.

“It was fine. You know, just normal assistant stuff. Booking flights, data entry, managing schedules, blah, blah, blah.”

“How does a virtual assistant work?” Alex asked.

“Basically, I get hired on by one or more companies—I currently work for three just to keep my day full—and they send me a list of tasks they need doing, and I complete them in my own time. I mean, not completely in my own time, I have deadlines. But as long as I work within that deadline, I can get everything done when I want. One of my employers just pays me a salary, averaging about fifteen hours of work a week. He never actually sends me that many tasks, but he insists on paying me it. The other two have sign-in websites that allow me to track my hours and bill them for them.”

“Do you like it?” I asked, taking the glass she offered.

“It’s alright. It pays the bills. But mostly it allows me my privacy. It means I can go out when I’m ready, and I don’t have to show my face if I don’t want to. I mean, you guys are shifters. Don’t you ever have days when you just don’t feel like trying to fit in with humans?”

“We don’t really have that problem,” Alex said. “We live on the compound. We’re an hour away from people. We only have to deal with other shifters.”

Alex began putting the food on the table. It smelled and looked amazing. I got the second bottle of wine out of the fridge and three fresh glasses from the cupboard. Sandra raised an eyebrow looking at my full glass of red she’d just poured.

“What? White wine goes with fish,” I said.
