CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

“You said you were from around here. From this city?”

She shook her head, looking into her mug sadly before sighing. “No, I was born about an hour from here, in a small town called Micmore. My parents used to tell me the stories of when they were Adventurers, and I said to myself that one day, I would follow in their footsteps.”

She scowled deeply into her mug. “Little did I know that following in their footsteps meant having to chase them to the upper levels instead of having them show me the ropes.”

“Did they ever actually tell you they’d show you the ropes?”

She glared at me, but it wasn’t as intense as the first time she met me. “No. But they are my parents.”

“Which is probably why they left you on your own,” I pointed out, going to take a sip of my ale before realizing it was empty. I lifted my hand to catch the attention of a barmaid.

She frowned. “What do you mean?”

I held up a hand, as the barmaid from earlier was back. “What’s up, hon?”

“Can I get another two ales, please,” I asked her with a charming smile.

I took out another two silvers and 50 coppers and placed them on the table.

Instantly they were gone, and the barmaid smiled sweetly at me. “Sure thing, sugar. Two more ales coming up.”

Then, she was gone as fast as the wind.

“As I was about to say,” I told Shana. “I think your parents want you to do this on your own. Not be overshadowed by them. You said your parents were over level 100?”

“Yes,” she frowned, her green eyes looking confused. “Dad was a level 154 Druid, and Mom was a level 153 Mage. What do you mean overshadowed by them?”

“Well,” I pointed out. “Maybe they felt that if they helped you, that you would not feel as if it was your own accomplishment. And them heading to the higher levels gives you an incentive to level up if you want to see them again.”

She slowly nodded. “I’d never looked at it that way. It just felt like my parents abandoned me.”

With a quirked eyebrow, I asked her, “Did they love you?”

She nodded emphatically. “Yes. Very much. I was their only daughter. I had another parent but she could not get pregnant, so she considered me her child as well.”

Stunned to hear that, I blurted out, “Wait, you had three parents?”

She looked at me with disbelief in her eyes. “Yes. Is that not normal in the world you are from?”

“Hmm. Not really. I had a mother and a father, but that was it, and it was normal in my world, where we came from, to only have two parents. I mean, some households would have blended families, or if a mother and father got divorced, they would have extended families, but having more than two parents is rare. Wait, does that mean that your father was having sex with both of them?” I asked, and the question might have come out sounding incredulous.
