Like body language, facial expressions are also tied to how you feel. You flash a genuine smile when you’re feeling good, and don a scowl when you’re upset. If your feelings can affect your facial expressions so easily, perhaps your facial expressions can influence your feelings!

To give it a shot, all you have to do is smile.

However, not just any smile will do; there are a few guidelines to help you do it right. You may be thinking, “Why would I need guidelines to smile?” Of course, no one needs to be taught to smile, but a forced smile is not the same as an authentic smile.

Here’s how you can imitate an authentic smile:

When you smile, allow the skin at the corners of your eyes to crinkle.

Don’t force your eyes to stay wide open—it’s okay if they squint a bit.

Show your teeth! Let your lips part and smile with your teeth showing.

If you have trouble with following these guidelines, there is a cheat: you can hold a pencil between your teeth! Holding the pencil in your mouth (horizontally) and gripping the pencil with your teeth pushes your mouth into the authentic smile position. When you just can’t conjure up an authentic smile, give the pencil a try instead.

With either option, hold your smile for 1 minute and enjoy the confidence boost!
