CHAPTER 18

Stubborn Old Men

“My grandbabies are never coming,” Terance said with heavy words. It was as if he nailed the lid on his own coffin. “My conspiracies drove them away and now I’m the crazy old man by his lonesome on the frontier.”

“Uh, then what have I been giving you coins for?” I asked.

He smiled. “Books and supplies all cost coins.”

“You have two experts and I’m not thrilled you were sending your findings to my mother,” Essi said.

Terance rubbed the back of his neck. “Um, who’s that?”

“Duke Persique of the Besilin Kingdom,” Essi said.

Terance blushed. “Um, about that. I never broke my contract with young Mark. The Duke offered me coins to watch after any new male arrivals. Nothing more, nothing less. I’ve done that without saying anything more than when a new young man arrived. I was assured there were protections in place.”

“You knew?” I blurted.

“I’m an old man in need of funds. When a powerful duke offers favors and fortune, you take them,” Terance replied. “Again, there were assurances, and our contract is rock solid. And Mark.”

“Yeah.”

“She probably knows a lot more than I ever will,” Terance said.

“There are assurances, but…” Essi began to unravel scrolls. “…the deal changed. I’m taking all the supplies I need. Test me on it, and I’ll kill you. With that said, I’m not your enemy. Here’s your chance, old man. I’m a rogue mage who has years on Earth, what do you want to know?”

She stuffed a few scrolls into the camping ruck she bought off Baron Lisoria. I stood there like a fish out of water. I wasn’t expecting for Essi to threaten my friend or rob him. Apparently, she was set in her way, and he was working for her mother.

“None of them are glowing for me,” I said.

“Yes, you’re on day two of being a mage, I wouldn’t expect them to shine for you,” Terance said. He turned to Essi and asked, “Tell me everything you can about Earth.”

“There’s a lot, but I’ll give you an hour as I pick through this mostly cluttered mess. Bill Mother for what I steal,” Essi said.

I sat at the table and listened to the conversation, hearing mostly a rehash. This time Essi did mention how a berserker trolloc waited under a tent that covered a rune. He hopped out unexpectedly and shoved his sword through her guts on Earth. Which meant she picked me to save her out of everyone.

Odd, but I healed her once and she had no one else besides contacts in Russia. She mentioned how defenses for the runes on both sides were ramping up. I wasn’t procuring items from Terance mostly because I didn’t know what was what.

Essi did though and when she finished, Terance said, “Our contract is still whole. I appreciate you sharing information about life on Earth. Notice how I didn’t ask you about anything else.”

“I did. Thank you for teaching me the basics of magic,” I replied, giving a friendly nod of goodbye.

Essi handed me the heavy bag and I slung it onto my back.
