Chapter Eleven
I immediately text Will.
So sorry I missed our evening!
I almost texted âdateâ but thought better of it. He texts back almost immediately.
Are you all right??
Yes.
Explain please.
Can I come over?
Iâm waiting.
Is there still pizza, or did you eat it all?
He texts back with an evil smiley face, but I know that heâs pulling my chain because no way would Will dare eat an entire Tinyâs pizza without me.
First things first, though. I go by my place to let out Paco. After doing his business, he jumps into the back seat of my car. Apparently he, too, wants to know whatâs been going on, so we drive over to Willâs house together.
Before I even get a chance to knock, Will throws back the front door and pulls me into his living room. âIâve been worried sick about you.â
âIâm sorry.â
âWhere have you been? Iâve been calling you all night.â
âFirst, pizza. Iâm absolutely starving.â
He shakes his head like he canât believe that Iâm thinking of food at a time like this, but he comes back from the kitchen with a pizza box, two plates, two beers, and a bowl of water for Paco.
While weâre eating, I fill him in on everything Travis told me.
âI canât believe Fontaine sent Rusty to drag you out of that meeting.â
âItâs like he said, he has to make sure I get treated like any other person.â
âHe got one thing right though. Youâre in no way responsible for what happened to Tara.â
I lay my plate down on the coffee table. âThatâs just it, Will. I feel responsible. At least a teeny bit. What was Tara coming over to tell me?â
âWeâll never know the answer to that, Lucy.â
âNot good enough.â
âI hope that doesnât mean what I think it means.â
âI offered to help the police, but Travis refused to even consider it.â
âSmart guy,â he mutters.
I look at Will. âI told Travis about my gift.â
Will looks surprised. âWhy did youânever mind. What did he say?â
âHe completely brushed me off. Even though I gave him ample proof,â I add in disgust.
âYou have to admit, Lucy, itâs kind of hard to believe.â Something in his voice makes me sit up.
âBut you believe it.â
âHow long have I known you?â Will asks, as if this answers my question, but something in his voice tickles my Spidey sense.
I pick up my plate again, but suddenly Iâm not hungry. I wonder what Will would say if I told him Iâve never caught him in a lie. This is definitely something I think I should tell him, but only when Iâm ready to tell him how I feel about him.
âSo hereâs what Iâm thinking,â I say. âGilly is the most logical suspect since she had both opportunity and motive.â
âMotive?â
âSheâs running around being Tara, isnât she?â
âTrue.â
âTravis let slip that Tara had multiple visitors the night she died. Any one of them, including Gilly, could have given her the cyanide.â
âHow are you going to find out who these visitors were if Travis wonât tell you?â
âBy doing my own investigation. Once I know who came to see Tara, then I can try to figure out who had the best motive.
