Chapter 6

The New Year celebrations were muted that particular year.

Just outside London, Darcy and Bingley saw in the New Year very quietly. While all around London there were celebrations long into the night, they stayed in their lodgings. They stayed in a fine tavern which served excellent food and drink.

They enjoyed a late supper and as the bells tolled midnight, they raised their glasses in a toast.

“Happy New Year, Charles.”

“Happy New Year, Fitzwilliam.”

“It’s been quite a year, hasn’t it?”

“Indeed it has. One year ago today, we were a brace of lonely bachelors. Now, we are married men.”

“Then let us drink to our wives.”

They raised their glasses once more.

“To Lizzy and Jane,” they said in unison.
