Chapter 14

Ruby

The last thing I need right now is a call from my agent. Chelsea Madison is ruthless, calculating, and so damn good at her job. She’s also increasingly persistent at weekly check-ins. I pick up without thinking, instantly regretting it.

“Hey,” she says, “so how’s the book coming?” Her voice is sing-songy. I’m guessing she’s had a glass or two of white wine. I look at the time. On the East Coast it’s after dinner. She’s probably returning from some fancy-pants restaurant in the city, calling from a taxi cab. I have this inclination because I’ve been at these fancy-pants dinners with her and I’ve been with her in the taxi cab when she calls other clients asking for an update.

“Hey, Chels,” I say, “it’s really a bad time.”

“Why? Because you don’t want to tell me you have clocked zero additional chapters this week? You know the deadline’s coming up. We’re going to need something. I need some pages to present to the team.”

“No, I get that. It’s just, everything is really bad right now,” I say. My voice starts cracking.

“The story? Why? Okay, we can go over the plot again.”

“No, not the story. My actual life, Chelsea.” I swallow. “I don’t have chapters done. Yes, the book’s shit. Yes, we should probably go over the plot sometime and start from scratch probably actually, because it’s all really bad, but—”

“Okay, take a deep breath. Start from the beginning. What’s going on, Ruby? Last week you weren’t feeling the story. But not like this. What’s happened in the last few days?”

“A lot,” I tell her. I tell it all. Dodge is upstairs sleeping, which is good because I don’t think he got any sleep last night. Earlier he told me he had tossed and turned all night, imagining the worst happening to his sister.

Now, with the house quiet, I give in to the truth, telling Chelsea everything, tears in my eyes as I tell her that Maple is gone.

“Wow, this is all so shocking. It could be a story in and of itself.”

“Don’t say that,” I say, my stomach falling, her words hitting closer to home than she realizes. It’s exactly what I’ve done before, use my life as fodder, and look where it’s got me, in a web of secrets, and an agent who thinks I can write a book when I can’t.

“But where’s Maple?” Chelsea asks. “I mean, actually, where do the cops think she might be?”

“There are no leads,” I say. “Well, I guess there was one lead. Maple’s boyfriend thought maybe his dad had something to do with it.”

“Oh, shit.”

“I know, right? Well, the dad got cleared, but poor Jude, how is he supposed to live with the man now that he just accused of being a predator?”

“Holy shit,” Chelsea says.

“I know, right? I mean, it’s good he spoke up, if he thought that maybe there’s some chance that his dad was involved. At least now it’s ruled out. But how does that relationship ever get repaired,
