‘But Tessa, you made this big thing in Berlin about wanting to talk to him. You made me promise to arrange it.’
‘I know. But things have changed.’
‘What things?’
‘I really can’t talk about it. Sorry.’
‘Okay, if you say so . ’
‘Where are you calling from?’
‘Kansas. Why?’
‘I just wondered if you were still in Europe somewhere . ’
‘Would that make a difference?’
‘No. Yes. Not really.’
‘Wait a minute, are you saying that there’s something you could say face to face but not over the phone?’
‘No. Maybe. I don’t know. It depends what you want to know.’
‘I don’t want to know anything. You were the one in Berlin who—’
‘I know, I know.’
‘You were so freaked out by the idea that somebody might’ve broken into your computer . ’
‘It’s not an issue any more.’
‘I told my friend at Caltech what you’d said, and he wants to talk to you. He asked me to set up a conference call—’
‘No. I’m sorry, I mean I’d be happy to help if I thought I could—’
‘You don’t even know what he wants yet. Hello? Tessa? You there?’
‘Yes, I’m here. I can’t talk – okay?’
‘Okay, I understand. Do you want to call me back on another phone?’
‘No. I’m sorry, I just can’t talk. Drop it, Ted. Trust me.’
‘I wish I knew what all this was about.’
‘Tell your friend I’m sorry I can’t help. I have to go now. Goodbye, Ted.’
Major Franklin stopped the tape and looked over at Jonathan for some reaction.
Jonathan continued to contemplate the view over Horse Guards Parade. The morning was bright but with a gusty wind. White clouds scudded across a chill blue sky.
‘Did you say there was another one?’ he said eventually, without turning.
‘Yes.’
‘Better hear it, don’t you think?’
The major, who had not even bothered to lift his hand from the small machine, pressed the switch again.
‘Tessa?
‘Listen, I talked to my friend Josh and told him exactly what you’d said, but he’s still very keen to talk to you.’
‘Ted, there’s really no point in—’
‘Wait, wait . let me explain something. What Josh was doing, and he didn’t tell me about this, I mean, when I was in Berlin I didn’t know any more than I told you. Even the other day I didn’t know the whole story. All I knew was that these guys were trying to trace a hacker – right?’
‘That’s what you said.’
‘What I didn’t tell you, because I didn’t know, was that this hacker is some guy who’s suspected of killing all those women in California – you know, the Ripper case? Have you read about it over there?’
‘I’ve . yes, I’ve . of course I’ve . I don’t see how . ’
‘My friend Josh’s brother is with the FBI. He’s heading up the search for this guy.’
‘I’m sorry, I just don’t see what this has to do with . ’
‘They seem to think that whatever it is you have in your computer that you were so worried about losing might help them to trace the guy.’
‘I don’t see how that could possibly .
