EIGHT
Arturo sits in Basiliâs, with the newspaper open. He orders a glass of juice from the waitress when she comes to his table. He then shrugs off his jacket and checks the time on his cell phone. Chiara is late, but that doesnât surprise him. She had agreed to meet him after her faculty meeting, but those meetings generally run late, and Chiara tends to get caught up in conversations with colleagues once she starts chatting, which takes her a long time to stop. Arturo returns the phone to his jacket pocket and returns his attention to the newspaper.
He consciously avoids scanning the news for anything related to gold-eyed killers. Enough is enough. Enough trying to make faulty connections based on circumstantial evidence, enough with keeping company with gay drug addicts. Having reached a dead end in Riccione, they were out of leads. There was no where else to go. Also, the last thing Arturo needs is to be associated with a guy like Moth. Urbino is a small town, everyone knows each other, and everyone is always watching. If people found out that he was spending time with Lucianoâs brother, Arturo would be the one to suffer the consequences of gossip and ribbing from his friends. Considering the situation more carefully, last night he realized that such gossip could be detrimental to Chiaraâs career, and he knew he would not be able to forgive himself if he put her in a position of brutta figura. Appearances were everything.
He knows how to play the game â his reputation is untarnished. Growing up, he had behaved as the perfect son, never getting into trouble, never using drugs. He studied and got high marks, took care of his aging parents, even stayed in Urbino to attend university in order to remain close to them. There he worked hard, putting in long hours in the law section of the library on his thesis and graduated with honors. Now he is doing his pratica with Luciano.
He should forget all this craziness and return to his studies. He has exams to take, one to allow him to practice law, the other to teach. He knows he will pass. His future is laid out before him and it is a rosy picture. He will become a lawyer, buy a house, and marry Chiara. Theyâll have enough money to buy a beautiful house, a car better than his Fiat, maybe get a dog, and be able to travel once a year to all those hot climate vacation places he and Chiara had talked about. A perfect, enviable life.
He stops perusing the sports section when his best friend Stefano drops by his table. Stefano also has an enviable life, works in his fatherâs company full-time now that he finished his degree in sociology, though the degree was unnecessary as Stefanoâs guaranteed not only a good living, but also a house his parents had built for him on the outskirts of town, now empty, waiting for the moment Stefano will marry his long-time girlfriend Sofia and move in.
