The car pulls up in front of the hotel at 10:00 a.m. on the dot. Slightly disappointed, I see it’s some kind of sleek black town car, not a limo this time. It makes sense—if they’re trying to be inconspicuous, driving a limo out into the desert with a trunk full of guns wouldn’t really help.

The guns.

As we slide into the backseat, I almost open my mouth to ask, then I close my mouth and reach into my bag for my phone. Quickly I text him: Where are the guns??

I see his mouth twitch slightly as he sees my question and types back: Being transported to the GPS location by more of your “underlings.”

The quotes make me wonder.

Are you bitter that I called you an “underling?” I ask.

His tiny smile widens as he answers: Not at all. You’re the boss.

Sure.

After a moment another message from him comes through: The guys who work for you that will meet us at the site are Leeds and Calico.

I mean, honestly. Who comes up with these fake FBI names? Leeds and Calico. Got it.

As the car winds its way through Las Vegas and onto the highway, I’m reviewing the gun catalog over and over in my head, but I keep getting things mixed up. I can see images of the guns in my mind, but I keep interchanging names and bullets. Why are there so many different kinds? Why can’t the colors and patterns just change like shoes?

He told me it was normal to do a demonstration this far away, but all I can think is how easy it would be for us both to get totally lost out here—buried somewhere the FBI would never find us.

Once we’ve been driving nearly an hour, my hands are clenched white in my lap. Damon’s hand starts to move toward mine when he seems to remember where we are. Instead he slowly shifts his knee over, pressing it against mine. It’s a small thing, but even the pressure of his leg against mine is meant as a source of comfort, to fortify me. I remember again the words of his prayer asking that I be sustained, and I remember the peace I felt at those words.

I’ll trust You, Father, I pray silently. I’ll trust You as best as I can.

Finally the car begins to slow, and I almost jump and roll out the back door. But that small but certain peace holds me in place as the car finally stops.

Damon casts a tiny glance at me before sliding out his side. I wait until he comes around to open my door before I step out.

Wow. It’s hot. They’ve chosen a solitary stretch of desert for our meeting, nothing but sandy-colored rock and dirt dotted with scraggy brush and the occasional cactus. The highway stretches into the bleached-white sky in
