CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Kyrose Chasm

A tiny, shelled fish swam across the tunnel entrance, followed by another. Looking around the lip of the cave, Carabella noticed that there was a lot more life at the end of the tunnel compared to the rest.

They were back in the open ocean, and it teemed with life. Tiny crustaceans clung to the surface of the cliffs and jutting rocks. Fish of all shapes, and sizes cruised by while plants with dagger-like leaves snatched anything that wandered too close as a thick cloud of jellyfish drifted weightlessly in all directions.

Carabella and Asta stared down into the chasm that seemed to swallow the entire ocean.

Nothing.

That’s all that seemed to be out there.

But Carabella knew better than to assume that. Even Asta knew better than to wander a foot outside of the cave exit. Who knew what could be waiting in the void?

Carabella also knew they couldn’t stay where they were either.

They would have to move, one way or another.

Trying to keep every part of her body inside of the tunnel, she moved all around the lip, attempting to see anything through the gloom.

Still nothing.

“I have some bad news,” Carabella said, forcing out a mouth full of water.

“What?” Asta asked, studying her out of the corner of her eye.

“We have to get out here.”

A soft little puff of laughter escaped Asta. “Yeah, I know,” Asta said, waving her hand around in snappy, quick movements.

Carabella hoped nothing was watching them from outside. Asta meant it to be sarcastic, but she didn’t realize it was also the motion that fleeing prey used.

“I mean, we either have to go up or down,” Carabella said, following the direction with her eyes. And still seeing nothing.

“Out there?”

“Yes. Out there.”

Asta scoffed. She looked at Carabella and then scoffed again. “You’re funny.”

When Carabella didn’t respond, Asta straightened so fast her sakai fins snapped, making a little popping sound.

Carabella shushed her, looking around to see if there was any movement, but it was too dark.

“You don’t even know where we are,” Asta whispered, straightening her fins and hair with her hands.

Carabella wished she would stop primping for just a minute. It wouldn’t matter what either of them looked like if they wound up in the belly of a sea beast.

“Yes, I do,” Carabella said, looking at Asta, then swinging her gaze back out of the tunnel to watch the darkness. “I think.”

Asta scoffed again.

“This is Kyrose Chasm.”

At Asta’s surprised look, Carabella nodded her head.

This was the ceremonial place that all Sianians were brought to when they passed. Weighed down with ornate dressings and jewels, they were cast away to rejoin the cycle of life.

Carabella also realized if this was a graveyard, it would also be a hotspot for animals looking for an easy meal, and Carabella didn’t want either of them ending up on the menu.

She paused for a long moment, deciding what to do next. She knew there could be any number of creatures down there, possibly even bigger and badder than the Ebranast. Or dangerous zones they were unaware of, never having been out of the kingdom before.
