I headed around to the side yard to check-in with Davis as the sun sunk low on the western horizon.
He was hanging precariously from a ladder as he clamped and twisted something near the downspout.
I shaded my eyes and looked up at him, ignoring the cut of his pants or the way they hugged his waist. âHey, I was going to run into town and try to rustle up something to eat. Can I get you anything?â
Davis finished the task at hand, tucked the pliers into his back pocket, and grinned down at me. âSure. Thatâd be great. I think I can finish up in about an hour, and it would be awesome if I didnât have to make another trip tomorrow.â
Hmmmm. I tried not to be offended by that comment. âGreat. Any preference?â
He climbed down the ladder with the speed and finesse of a firefighter. âNot at all.â He patted his absolutely ripped abdomen and chuckled. âI pretty much eat whatever I want.â
I hoped he couldnât see the jealousy flooding my eyes. âGot it. Back in a flash.â
He waved absently and returned to his chores.
As I drove Blue Bell into town, I liked the way it handled. Once I was flush with the money from all the bookings, maybe I could find a used vehicle of the same make and model. I appreciated the hookup from Frannie, and Craigâs hospitality, but I knew I couldnât borrow the car forever.
Main Street was deserted at this time of day. Most of the eateries in town must have catered to a breakfast and lunch crowd. I turned and made a second pass. A dim âOpenâ sign caught my attention, and I pulled to the curb to stare into the window.
Nanitaâs Mexican food appeared to be my only option. I ordered a chicken taco al carbon for me, and three beef burritos with the works for Davis. I couldnât imagine how much food a man his size could put away, but I didnât want him to think Iâd skimped after everything heâd done for me today.
At the last minute, I added a side order of chips and guacamole, and debated whether I should sip a Margarita while I waited. However, I had managed to stay on Sheriff Allenâs good side, and I didnât want to push my luck with a possible DUI to ruin my so-far-so-good fresh start.
Before I could ultimately decide, a young waitress brought my food. The to-go bags were brimming with amazing aromas, and I couldnât get home fast enough.
When I pulled the vintage china from the cupboard and arranged the food on the plates, the silly juxtaposition made me giggle. That was the moment Davis walked in.
He inhaled deeply and patted his stomach. âThat smells delicious, but is there something I should know?â
My cheeks flushed, and I tipped the refined Bernardaud plate toward him. âNo. Just my stupid brain. Something about putting this take-out on fine china made me laugh.â
Davis shrugged. âIf you ask me, it looks perfect.â
I smiled and set the plates, napkins, and silverware on the sturdy table in the corner of the kitchen.
