Accommodations

The aesthetic here is rustic, and hotel accommodations range from boutique mountain lodges with elaborate amenities to frayed cabin motels with charming exteriors and interiors that have seen better days. Hotels and motels get you closer to town, while cabins make for a more secluded weekend. Make reservations in advance; Idyllwild can book completely on weekends.

Idyllwild Vacation Cabins (54380 N. Circle Dr., 951/663-0527, www.idyllwildvacationcabins.com, 7am-10pm Mon.-Fri.) is a local company with a large selection of rental cabins. You can search by price or preference: pet-friendly, with views, with hot tubs, on a creek, etc. Cabins are searchable and bookable on their website, but they also have an actual, physical location in Idyllwild’s downtown and an actual, real live human in their office who can assist with booking. The office is convenient for last-minute bookings when your day trip turns into a weekend getaway. They also offer centralized management assistance.

The family-owned Idyllwild Inn (54300 Village Center Dr., 888/659-2552, www.idyllwildinn.com, $107-160) dates from 1904 and is a favorite of PCT hikers and repeat visitors. Set on five wooded acres in the center of town, it features cabins, suites, and theme rooms. Its 12 one- and two-bedroom rustic cabins are original with knotty pine paneling, fireplaces, and private decks. Cabin #9 is carved with historic graffiti dating to the 1950s. Eight new rustic cabins are family-friendly with queen beds and sleeper sofas. New rustic suites offer Jacuzzi tubs, queen beds, and sleeper sofas. Eight themed rooms are a relatively recent addition.

The S Idyllwild Bunkhouse (25525 Hwy. 243, 951/659-2201, www.idyllwildbunkhouse.com, $109-169) offers rustic, camp-themed rooms with knotty pine interiors with room configurations that appeal to couples or families. Queen bedrooms, two-room suites, queen plus twin bedrooms, and downstairs queen plus twin loft rooms all come with kitchenettes and private balconies with forest views. A continental breakfast is delivered to your door each morning. Amenities include DirecTV and Wi-Fi. The hotel is less than a mile north of town.

Nine rustic individually decorated rooms make up the Strawberry Creek Inn (26370 Hwy. 243, 951/659-3202, www.strawberrycreekinn.com, $197-207). The cozy rooms including courtyard, queen, and fireplace suites have Wi-Fi, private bathrooms, and TVs. Some also offer private decks, fireplaces, or canopy beds. A full, homemade breakfast is included. The two-story Strawberry Cottage on the property features a private entrance, full kitchen, and whirlpool tub. The inn is in the center of town.

Too much rustic got you down? The Grand Idyllwild Lodge (54820 Pinecrest Rd., 951/659-2383, www.grandidyllwildlodge.com, $265-315) might be the place for you. The Craftsman-style boutique lodge is situated at the top of the town in Fern Valley close to Aroma and Idyology restaurants and Humber Park hiking trails. They offer seven king suites and two queen guest rooms with private entrances, decks, gourmet breakfast, fireplaces, flat-screen smart TVs, a gym, Swedish-style sauna, and spa services.
