Snorkeling

For scuba diving on the Oaxacan coast, you’ll have to look to Huatulco or Puerto Escondido, but there are a few good snorkeling spots to be found among the hippie beaches. The best snorkeling is on Playa Estacahuite, which has calm, clear waters and lots of rocks for marine critters to hide in. You can rent equipment from the palapas on the beach.

Unless you’re a guest at Bahía de la Luna, the hotel on Playa La Boquilla, you’ll need to bring your own equipment to snorkel at that beach. Like Estacahuite to the south, La Boquilla’s waters are calm, crystal clear, and full of rocks to peek around.

For snorkeling tours, call Aaron Vásquez at Luna Tours (corner of road to Playa Panteón and public beach parking, tel. 958/117-7538 or 958/106-6062, www.lunatours.wordpress.com). He’s a Puerto Ángel native who has lived here since before tourism reached these shores. Aaron, a free diver who dives down as far as 25 meters (82 ft) below the surface without a tank, knows every nook and cranny of the local reefs, and will take you on a 3-4-hour snorkel tour (US$11) where you’ll see lobsters, octopuses, crabs, and a wide variety of reef fish. Aaron says that they also regularly see dolphins, whales, turtles, manta rays, and an array of marine bird species. Aaron’s not really an office kind of guy—you’re more likely to find him wandering the beach, but unless he’s in the water, he’s always got his phone handy.
