Telephone

Australian telecommunications were deregulated in 1995, and now several dozen companies provide services. Telstra and Optus are the main landline phone companies. Telstra, the government-owned phone company, is used by the vast majority of Australians, often simply because they had service set up before deregulation. Telstra also has the broadest coverage in outlying areas.

Generally speaking, for a basic Telstra plan, expect to pay $50 per month with unlimited local calls, but a $0.45 fee for timed mobile and international calls and $1 per long-distance call and $0.36 per minute for calls to Telstra mobile phones (capped at $1 for the first 20 minutes) and $0.36 per minute for non-Telstra mobile phones (capped at $2 for the first 20 minutes). International calls start at $0.39 for the call, plus $0.21 per minute.
