IT STARTED WITH A NOTE on a silver tray carried by a submissive werewolf. “Chief Faris?” murmured the young man sidling up to my mate’s elbow. Thom, glanced at Pet one more time, unfolded the paper, then paled.

“What is it?” I sent down the mate bond.

“Who is the more relevant question. Answer: the woman who gave birth to me.”

Despite my mate’s evasive wording, his scent suggested curiosity, interest, perhaps even yearning. So I cut to the chase. “The note’s from your mother.”

“I suppose you could call her that. She wants to meet. Now. After ignoring me for three decades. Assuming she even wrote this. I wouldn’t know her handwriting from a stranger’s on the street.”

“You wouldn’t know your mother’s handwriting, but you might know her scent.”

Thom’s eyes were hooded as he considered the slip of paper. He held it out a good distance from his body, pinching the note between two fingers like a filthy garment he wanted to discard. His gaze flicked to me, though, and he nodded. Then he raised the paper to his nostrils, sniffed, and his lips thinned.

“Well?”

“It might smell like family. Possibly.”

And Thom would always wonder if he didn’t answer this summons. So—“Go,” I told him. I could handle Pet’s theatrics even if they weren’t, as appeared likely, already over and done with.

Thom’s jaw clenched. “We haven’t finished discussing our mate bond.”

“We’ll have many years to finish that conversation,” I countered. “This may be your only chance to find the source of your X chromosome.”

The X chromosome—the one werewolf traits were carried on. Whether or not Thom was aware of that scientific factoid, his mixed emotions flew down the mate bond wordlessly. Yes, he was curious. But instinct told him to stay by my side until the issue of Chief Reed was dealt with. I was his mate and I was in clear and present danger. The wolf inside him refused to abandon me now.

Instinct likely would have won out if I hadn’t nudged him in the opposite direction. “You said you were here to back me up. Well, backing me up now means staying out of the limelight.”

And that did it. For himself, Thom wouldn’t step aside. But for my sake...

He nodded once, square chin dipping in what might in an earlier era have been a bow. Then I was alone with a furious teenager...and an audience of dozens of werewolves.
