Captain John Fletcher, 94 Field Regiment RA.

The Druance stream.

Corporal Nevill Trim of 4 Wiltshires was left with the impression: ‘There was so much going on all the time. We just took one day at a time. We used to wake up in the morning and think, “Oh good gosh I’m still here”.’

By early evening the whole battalion was across the Druance, but it was clear that St Jean-le-Blanc was too strongly held. They were withdrawn after dark. At about 2100 hrs ‘Dim’ Robbins was told that: it had been decided by the brigade commander that 4 Wilts should withdraw, because the objective was Mont Pinçon, not St Jean-le-Blanc, and he had decided on a different way.

The cost of that little battle for that day was one officer and twenty-one other ranks killed, two officers and thirty-seven other ranks wounded and, with depleted companies, that’s a lot.
