Ryker's mood was instantly shot to death by that letter. It started sweetly enough, but the dark turn not only hit him hard like a troll punch to the neck but also faced him with some uncomfortable truths that he'd been working full-time to avoid looking at directly.
He stared at his hands, and for a moment, he saw the blood on them. He closed his eyes to avoid it and ripped his sword off of his hip in disgust, setting it on the floor and kicking it under the bed with a scratching sound that miraculously didnât wake anyone up.
As he left the room, he couldn't help but shake the sense that Vestra was right. They deserved to die, and hundreds, if not thousands of people deserved to kill them for similar reasons.
He managed to kick the thought into the dark recesses of his mind for the time being, forcing a lopsided smile as he looked at Vestra where she lay on the bed. She was on her side, snoring gently, a tiny bit of drool on the pillow that she shared with Samaya. Brook was wedged between them, but to Ryker's amusement, Samaya's tail was wrapped sweetly around Vestra's leg. That was enough for the smile to return to his lips genuinely. Plus, Vestra seemed to be sleeping peacefully, despite the dark contents of her letter.
He walked into the business section of the inn and greeted Thraki at the counter. She had slipped a long coat over her nightgown but hadn't fully changed yet.
âCooking breakfast?â Ryker asked as she fired up the brick oven behind the front counter.
Thraki nodded at him and smiled. âShould be a busy day. We have lots of mouths to feed.â
Ryker took that as his cue. âI'll go see how many eggs we've got so far.â
âAnd milk,â Thraki added over her shoulder.
âRemember to change clothes,â Ryker chuckled as he left.
When he got outside, Ryker looked around. The air was fresh and cool, and the sun was far to the east, not yet rising over the treetops. Early morning was the best time to do chores, so Ryker got as many done as he could.
First, he fed the chickens, coaxing them out of their coops to feed, which made it easy to check for eggs. There were seven so far, with hopefully four or five more to come a bit later on. He put those in a basket, then fed the rabbits and tidied their hutches. He may need to choose one of them to serve for dinner that eveningâthey may not have enough meat otherwise to feed their many guests. As long as he avoided Mr. Fluffpuff, Samayaâs bunny, he should be safe.
Lastly, he milked Stella, and that was that for the early routine. The normally starry skies looked as though they might be considering raining a bit later, thick with gray clouds that choked the canopy of the forest.
Ryker headed back inside to hand off what he'd gathered to Thraki and found her changed into a brown dress and a furry apron, collecting a few more coins from Hilbren.
