Chapter 8

Technically, there were two murders. One murder with two victims? How did that work, exactly?

Well, it didn’t really matter. There were two of Amaranth’s soldiers dead, and no one knew who did it. You could say the queen was none too pleased about that. Instead of a few calm days after our trek to the fairies, we had ones filled with tension, and I couldn’t say I was unaffected by it. Even worse, it cut into my time with Emily, and I had barely seen the catgirl since we returned.

I wondered if she was investigating the murders, or if there was anything I could help with about that. I doubted it.

It made me a little frustrated, really. Maybe it was a little tactless from me for feeling so, two people were murdered, but I missed the interactions I had with Emily, I missed seeing her smile. Seeing her in a rush during a few moments wasn’t the same thing. And it also affected my advances with magic. I sighed. I shouldn’t think like that. If someone was going around killing those sworn to Amaranth, Emily herself could be in danger.

When it came to magic, I was finding it easier to use what little I knew. It wasn’t rare for me to juggle a pair of fireballs, all without burning myself. It took some effort, especially when I tried to stop fire from harming me, but I could do it. And I tried some other tricks. I couldn’t call light as Emily did, so I innovated with fire, trying to make the fireballs explode into bright flames, with some success. I also made them explode when I wanted it, for the most part, and even succeeded at controlling the strength of the explosion, somewhat.

And I could also shoot fire from both hands now. I had gotten so used to use my right hand at first that I didn’t even consider the left, and when I tried with it, I realized I struggled more. From what I knew, there should be no reason for it. There was no difference in manipulating mana with one hand or the other. Hell, technically, my hands weren’t the ones manipulating the mana. Though I kind of gestured them as I used what little magic I knew, what truly was working the magic was my brain, with the aid of my sight. There was no reason for one hand to struggle more than the other, unless it was some kind of mental block I had been developing.

Fortunately, I fixed that easily enough, started practicing with both hands, and then even using both at once, making me appear like some demented madman when I once started spinning around and throwing fire all around me. I was lucky enough no one had seen me, and the grass in the small courtyard that had become my training area had already been so blackened from my previous training that it didn’t show any difference.

I sighed when I came to the end of what little training I expected to do that afternoon, looked up into the sky above.
