Chapter 13

Dessert?

Back at the hotel, our new guests had already made their way down to the pool. The place was breaking out into a total party, with every one of the beautiful women greeting each other like old friends.

I really had to get the new dessert menu moving.

I made a rush back to the front desk and found that Carak had not only already delivered the temporary new menu, but that Evangeline had already formatted it, printed plenty of copies and was finishing off with the laminating.

‘You’re my hero.’

‘I know,’ she replied dryly without even looking my way, pulling the last menu out of the laminator and handing it to me along with a stack of 20 others.

The menu presented a range of seven different desserts that Carak had pulled out of nowhere: blends of starfruit and orange, caramelized nuts, toasted almond flakes, blends of tropical pineapple with berry sauces, cream and mango and papaya nectar…

My head got lost in the sheer sight of the ingredients stacking up endlessly.

‘Unbelievable,’ I muttered, examining the menu. ‘How did he come up with this so fast?’

‘Carak? He’s a professional, just like the rest of us. Also a thank you for the designing and laminating wouldn’t go completely amiss.’

‘Yeah, of course, thank you,’ I said in earnest. ‘You know, in a state scattered with magic that can accomplish all kinds of complex stuff, you would think that somebody would have come across a spell that laminates paper.’

‘Oh, yeah?’ Evangeline smirked. ‘What would that spell look like? Laminoso? I’m sure some poor jackass really thought hey, when I grow up I want to master lamination magic. Just get them to the pool, Mr. Manager.’

Evangeline gave me another wry smile and returned to her computer.

Back at the pool I set the menus out, initially attempting to do it discreetly but realizing fast that it was an impossible task, even with my guests distracted with greeting each other and indulging in the mana-infused waters of the pool.

‘You’re the manager, right?’

One of Veronica’s friends caught my arm gently as I passed by.

‘I’m Finn, what can I do for you?’

‘What would you recommend for somebody with a bittersweet tooth?’

‘Uhh…’ I glanced over to the bar and mouthed bittersweet at Chase. He discreetly waved two fingers at me, indicating the number on the menu. ‘The Starfruit’s Song - and if you’re really into bittersweet, I can add an extra dash of citrus.’

‘That sounds perfect. What about lunch?’

‘For somebody with a bittersweet tooth, check out the food menu. We’re running a special menu just for today.’

‘Oh?’ She smiled with interest. ‘Anything I’d be interested in?’

‘Just an exclusive collection of desserts that we’re testing out, designed by our head chef. They’ll all be available from midday.’

That got her attention.

Exclusive. In order to convince the guests that this was all part of our plan, I needed to frame it as if it was deliberate.

Considering how much of a liking Luria seemed to have taken to me, I was confident that she wouldn’t spill the beans about the disaster in the kitchen.
