Outside the range of the cell jammer stored in the basement, Rayna tries the call to Wendyâs cell again with no luck. It rings a handful of times, then skips to voicemail.
âWendy? Meryl? Where the fuck are you?â She doesnât try to moderate her tone. Even if she were to locate where the twins had run off to, she wouldnât have enough time to get them back, into makeup and in front of the camera before she loses the crew. âWe had a deal, and we will be charging you for breaking it. Look forward to hearing from our lawyers. I hope you werenât planning on eating this Christmas.â
Itâs cruel, but she doesnât care. At this point, the less she has to worry about, the better. The twins were just another slow-moving stress she didnât need. All that with the unpredictable Hardy and the rest of these misfit toys. Raynaâs head throbs, no doubt the combination of low-grade booze and poor sleep catching up to her.
Still, the show must go on.
She watches as one of her medics patches up the damage to Elliotâs hand and, in a strike of impatience, marches over to the man, intending to chastise him. When she reaches his side, she sees the strain in his eyes, the loss of his usual spark. She knows people. She knows not to push too hard. Reigning it back is hard work, but she does it despite herself. âAre you okay?â she asks, and he simply nods. âWanna talk about it?â
Elliot shuffles in the chair as the young woman finishes wrapping the bandage around his hand, secures the end in place with a safety pin and departs. âNot really.â
âLook, I know I was kind of a cunt last night,â she begins, but Elliot cuts her off with a scoff. âBut I honestly donât want you getting hurt over this. Tell me what you need.â
He stops and thinks for a second, turns in his seat towards Rayna and looks up at her, her body backlit by the sun like some biblical whore.
âI could use a drink,â Elliot says, but the wry smile on his face is enough to let Rayna know heâs only half-serious.
âI think weâve both had enough to last us a while. Letâs just get through this day and then this time tomorrow, youâll be on your way back home.â
âWhat?â Elliot asks, his face losing all warmth. âWe are staying here another night?â
Rayna puts her hands on her hips, switches her position so he is looking directly at the sun. âWe got in late last night. After the interviews, we need footage of everyone looking around, exploring the house, gathering in the common rooms. This show is about bringing you all together as much as it is about individual healing.â She stops, then after a brief pause, places a hand on his shoulder. âAnd you could really use the healing. Has anything come back to you yet?â
Elliot shakes his head, and without meaning to, Rayna sighs. âSorry Iâm not having the flashbacks you dreamt of,â Elliot scowls, shaking her hand from his shoulder.
