Investing IN Your Money
When Snow White’s stepmother stepped in front of that devoted magical mirror every morning, she didn’t say, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the most hateful, horribly ugly, woefully ignorant stepmother-with-bad fashion-sense of them all?” No. She stepped up with swagger and confidence and said, “Who’s the fairest of them all?”—and believed, without a shadow of a doubt, that the answer would and should be her. While I don’t think the Evil Queen should be our model for healthy, productive relationships or moral judgment, I think—at least in this particular area—she got something right. She put out into the world what she expected to get. Her confidence and her ridiculously huge sense of self-worth were infectious.
If you’re hesitant to get behind the Evil Queen’s confidence model, ask yourself if you’ve heard people joke about their financial future in negative ways. “Oh, I’ll just end up eating cat food when I’m eighty” or “I’d better get used to this shopping cart, because this will be my home when I retire.” Maybe you laughed at the time, because the person seemed as if they were joking as well. I wish you wouldn’t, and if these were your jokes, I’d like you to stop.
Think about what you are telling yourself, subconsciously, about your future every time you say negative things like that, or even think them. You’re not suggesting wealth or privilege, certainly, and it’s fine if that’s not your ultimate goal. But you’re not even suggesting that you will be comfortable or have sufficient money for your needs. You are telling yourself that you will be impoverished, and if we tell ourselves enough times that we will be something, then we shouldn’t be surprised when that’s exactly what happens. Of course, this isn’t what you intend, but our lives are the result of our attitude and words. So—create a self-fulfilling prophecy that works for you rather than one that works against you by wholeheartedly believing you will have an amazing retirement, and this simple attitude change will drive you to take steps that will get you there!
Imagine if you behaved this way in any of the other relationships in your life—in your marriage, with your children, or with your colleagues. If you consistently showed no real interest in what was happening, put no thought into the future, didn’t invest in that relationship, or spoke negatively about the future constantly, the relationship would likely not last. Nobody wants to be in a relationship with Sleepy or Dopey or Grumpy for long. Whether you have thought about it in these terms or not, you do have a relationship with your money. If you keep telling yourself you don’t care about where your money comes from or where your money goes, then you won’t have a healthy relationship with it. Money will stay and work for you so long as you work to create an environment where it is appreciated (pun intended). It may sound silly, but what does it hurt to
