Hagan moved along a broad carpeted corridor to a square lobby where a man sat reading a newspaper. Willie Garvin, walking to one side and just behind Hagan, said: "Ça va, Maurice?"
The man looked up, stared without pleasure, then got to his feet. "Willie," he said in uncertain greeting.
"This one is called Hagan," said Willie. His French was fluent, with little accent, and far better enunciated than his English. He turned Hagan slightly, so that Maurice could see the knife held against Hagan's back. "He has been asking me many difficult questions concerning Pacco, so for the sake of old friendship I have brought him here. It seems better to me that Pacco should answer for himself. D'accord?"
Maurice licked his lips and forced a smile. "No doubt," he said, and moved to the door of Pacco's study. He went in, closing the door after him. Ten seconds later it opened and he beckoned.
"Bien, Willee."
Hagan walked in, feeling the point of Willie's knife blade against his back. Behind an intricately carved desk sat a heavy man with a fleshy face. He wore a light gray suit. Around the right arm was a black mourning band, two inches deep. There were four other men in the room. They were of a type Hagan knew well. Hoods. They looked the same in any country. The tension in the room was a palpable thing.
"Pacco, mon vieux." Willie spoke cheerfully as Maurice went out and closed the door. "I present to you a M'sieu Hagan, who is much interested in you."
"It's good to see you again, Willee." Pacco did not get up, and his eyes were watchful.
"He carries a gun," said Willie, and one of the men moved quickly forward. "The pocket." Willie nodded toward the jacket pocket. The man's hand slid inside and brought out the automatic.
"Right. There's the man you wish to see, M'sieu Hagan." A push in the back from Willie sent Hagan stumbling toward a chair which stood across the desk from Pacco. He recovered and sat down, staring around him with angry eyes. Willie's knife had disappeared.
"So you are interested in me?" Pacco said.
"Why not?" Hagan's voice was belligerent. "You're interested in me. The type who called on me with a gun made that clear enough."
"Didi?" Pacco sat up a little straighter. "So that is why he has not reported. I wish to know what happened to him, M'sieu Hagan. Also about another of my men, Chaldier."
"Before you get going, Pacco . . ." Willie walked forward, hands in trouser pockets. He settled himself on the corner of the desk and smiled. "I have a small favor to ask. You may spend some time with this fellow, and I don't wish to hang around."
Pacco rubbed a smooth cheek. "A favor? You are not here on business, Willee?"
Willie laughed and said something coarse. "No. Not on business. Just a little holiday, Pacco. The weather at home is not good. Apart from bringing our friend here, I was coming to see you in any case, to ask where I can find Nicole.
