Credit where credit is due and Marie couldn’t knock Augusta’s manners because as soon as they were led into the back parlour where Gillian Alnwick greeted them, Augusta was all sweetness and light. Indulgently, she smiled at Marie as Gillian thanked Marie for giving them the opportunity to discuss books, etc. Equally, in her falsehood, Marie returned Augusta’s sugary smile. On sitting down, Marie resolved not to let Augusta affect her. Augusta was an annoying woman who had no significance to her, and unfortunately, as with any century there was always the chance that you might meet someone who you didn’t get on with and in this 18th century world, it appeared Augusta was Marie’s annoying acquaintance.

All seated, Gillian signalled for the servant to pour her companions a glass of wine, before requesting the food was served to her four guests. “Miss Hammond, my brother spoke of the requirement of wine and food being served at a book club.”

“Yes, it is compulsory, well if not wine, mmmm coffee, but any book club I have attended there is always wine.” Actually, in her final year at university, Marie and her housemates held a book club. Every week loads of people descended upon the terrace house in Bristol armed with wine, beer and bags and bags of crisps! “Thank you, Miss Alnwick for keeping the tradition,” and taking an offered glass of wine, Marie raised it in the air. “Let us make a toast.”

“Yes, let us,” replied Gillian raising her glass. “Please Miss Hammond, you must make it.”

“Thank you,” and sweeping her gaze amongst the party, Marie smiled. “Here’s to much fine intellectual talk on books, pleasant chat and being amongst friends. The book club.”

“The book club!”
