Chapter Five

As Madeline settled herself inside the sleek black Bentley, the smartly uniformed chauffeur closed the car door for her. She could not get over how odd it might seem to the other residents of her modest-looking apartment complex that she had been picked up in this fancy car. They’d probably think she had either won the lottery or had started working as a high-end call girl. Oh, well.

She shook her hair back and tucked a stray piece behind her ear. She watched through the car’s heavily tinted windows as the hustle and bustle of downtown Dallas, the buildings and traffic and people, changed into the quieter outskirts of Male Order. The town was on the small side, with only about ten thousand people calling themselves native residents, but Madeline sensed that it would be growing soon. Family-owned shops and markets dominated the local business scene here and so did family-owned restaurants—the kind where great-great grandma’s secret lasagna recipe was Friday night’s dinner special.

Yet, for all its soft, quiet, almost rugged quaintness, there was a certain sophistication underlying everything in Male Order. The streets were clean without any hint of trash littering the perfectly hedged grass lining the sidewalks. The landscaping was elegantly done, with Texas wildflowers constituting the majority of the flowers that peppered the planters with their bright bursts of orange, blue, and yellow.

They drove toward downtown Male Order. Fully restored and maintained buildings from the town’s illustrious past mixed with newer, trendier buildings along the waterfront and into the heart of the town. Once they drove into the center of town, Madeline could not take her eyes off the charming rows of shops, the coffee houses, and the grand, elegant, beautifully structured gazebo in the middle of the old-fashioned roundabout. It was its own little green island, perfectly maintained and starkly white against the bright flowers running along the base. There was a sophisticated, timeless beauty about everything here, even the public restrooms, she was sure. Erika also told her that there was really good shopping up here, especially at Jacqueline’s flagship location, which she saw out the window to the left of the car. Its carved, elegant façade made her want to jump out of the car and take a picture of it. She was sure that if she posted that picture online, people would think she had gone to Paris or London for the day. Apparently, the huge and very high-end department store had started in Male Order, but she would have to make a special visit some other time. She barely had enough money to pay all of her bills and rent.

As they passed through downtown, the newer shops took precedence over the old ones, all of the famous high-end shops—Chanel, Fendi, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Armani, David Yurman, Tiffany, and countless others—lined the street on either side, practically begging her to pass through their shiny glass doors to experience their glamour and magic. If only her credit card would let her.

“Welcome to SoMale,” the driver said.
