Chapter Nineteen

Chelsea

I had been dreading this day. Today made eight whole years since that monster killed my dad right in front of my face. I closed every blind in my house. I just wanted to be alone and get through this day. I sat on my couch and flipped through channels before grabbing my Kindle off the coffee table. I was reading this dope ass book called Dope, Love, & Karma by Dedra B. As I read the words in the book, I couldn’t help but think about La’Cari. He was what I wanted, but I knew he would never be my man. I just planned on riding the wave and enjoying it for the time being. I would never tell him to leave his wife and if he decided to get back with her, I couldn’t do anything but respect it.

I was deep in my book when my doorbell rang. I wasn’t expecting anyone, and I knew it wasn’t Shana or Ca’Andi because they would’ve used their keys. I walked over and opened the door with the chain still connected. I couldn’t help but smile when I saw the biggest bouquet of white roses. I immediately took the chain off and signed for the flowers. I placed the vase on the island bar that sat in the middle of my kitchen before removing the card to see who was able to make me smile when I wanted to cry.

I know today means a lot to you, I just wanted to make you smile like you are smiling reading these words. Keep your head up, beautiful.

La’Cari

That damn sister of mine had to have given him my address. I smiled and cried at the same time as I read the card. There it was that man’s mother was laid up in a hospital in critical condition, and he still took the time out to think about me. Impressed would’ve be an understatement. I was about to grab my phone and call La’Cari to thank him, but the doorbell rang again. I walked over and snatched the door open. I had a confused look on my face when Dula and Ca’Andi came walking in carrying grocery bags.

“I know you feel like shit today because I do too, so hey, if we are going be sad we’re going to do it with tacos, tequila, and movies,” Ca’Andi said, taking the taco ingredients from the bags.

“Hey Dula! I’m ok sister, you didn’t have to do this. You know I’m no good on this day, and I don’t want to be the party pooper.”

I didn’t have to tell Dula to make himself at home; that nigga had already helped himself to a bag of chips and a pop from my kitchen. The man even picked up the remote and turned to ESPN. I knew my sister wasn’t going to take no for an answer, so I went into the kitchen to help her get started on the tacos.

“These are beautiful,” she said. smelling the flowers.

“If you think they’re beautiful wait until you read the card,” I said handing it to her.
