When Nadia had phoned her mother to say she was getting the bus home from Truro, Guy had insisted on paying for a taxi to bring her back to Port Agnes. He’d been too quick for protests and had booked and paid for it before Frankie or Nadia could argue. When Frankie had tried to pay him back, he’d refused to even entertain the idea. It was just one thing, on an increasingly long list, that was making Frankie fall in love with him a little bit more every day. Nadia had looked completely exhausted by the time she got home, so it had been just as well she hadn’t come on the bus. When they’d got up the next day, a text had come through on Nadia’s phone to say that Beth had safely delivered a 7lb 1oz baby boy. It must have been one hell of a shock for Beth and her parents, but in Frankie’s experience, babies almost always brought their own love and the family would soon be making Beth’s son the centre of their world.

Frankie could remember being told, when Nadia was expecting Remi, that there was no love like a grandparent had for their grandchildren, but the force of it had still blown her away. When Ryan had decided he was taking his family back to New Zealand, it was as though a part of Frankie was being ripped away from the rest of her body and it hurt every bit as much. Her own mother had always favoured Hari over Nadia and she’d definitely made the most of having a grandson. That had been compounded when Nadia had married someone Bhavna thought wasn’t good enough for her, but Frankie had to give her mother credit for that one, because she’d been right. Ryan was nowhere near good enough for Nadia or their children.

Bhavna’s face had twisted almost in on itself, as if she was sucking on the world’s bitterest lemon, when she’d been told about Nadia and Ryan’s marriage breaking down. She’d blamed Frankie, telling her that she’d set her daughter the worst possible example by walking away from her own marriage. But if that had helped Nadia to finally accept she was fighting a losing battle with Ryan, then Frankie would go through with the trauma of ending her own marriage a hundred times over. Except now it looked like she’d lost Hari and all of her messages to him were listed as being unread. The silence was deafening.

The day after the dance competition was Frankie’s last day of university before the Christmas break, but she’d found it almost impossible to concentrate on anything and every five minutes she checked her phone to see if there was anything from Hari. The last message she’d sent him had been a knee-jerk reaction to the silence and a desperate attempt to provoke a response. Now she was wishing she’d deleted it, before he’d seen it, but it was too late and now she was terrified of what his response would be.
