Chapter 9

Paris

I didn’t hate Vix’s family, exactly, but I was on the fence about it.

I got where they were coming from. Vix was an incredibly loveable, chaotic little ball of fluff and needed constant supervision to keep him alive. I could see how it would make his family overprotective and paranoid when it came to his safety.

But the way they had him locked inside his own home for simply being himself had me low-key pissed off from the moment the mice had told me about his situation.

They treated him like a child. He had a monitor bracelet on, for God’s sake. No, it was worse than treating him like a child—he was treated like a criminal.

Trixie had assured me that she wouldn’t put up with any more monitoring devices. The second she saw one on his body, she would send it into the shadows.

Whatever that meant.

I shook my hand out as I watched Vix’s family retreat from my space because Gareth had a mean grip.

He let me win? Pfft. I’d seen the way he’d flexed his hand as he was leaving. I’d given as good as I’d gotten. I was mildly annoyed that our match had been interrupted, but Vix was right. The shadow energy we’d all been kicking up wasn’t good for my friends. Especially the babies.

“Are you okay, bunny?” Did he want to leave with his family?

“Peachy keen, jellybean!” Vix uncovered the bunny cage and crouched down and whispered, “How about you guys? I picked a quiet gadget to break up the family bonding. I didn’t think more noise would be a good thing for you.”

The entire fluffle of bunnies scampered over and stuck their noses against the bars. Vix leaned forward and let his nose boop against any bunny brave enough to try.

“Okay, the bunnies can be my kids too,” he announced.

“Marry me.”

When Vix gasped, I looked around to see where the voice had come from.

Oh, wait. It was me.

I meant it though, so I couldn’t take it back. I wanted to marry my human bunny. I wanted to marry him so hard and so thoroughly that he and I would be stuck together for the next three lifetimes.

“Paris…” Vix’s eyes went shiny, but I couldn’t tell if they were happy tears or stranger danger tears.

I kept going too fast with him. I knew I was, but I couldn’t stop.

It’s a personality trait I’ve never been able to get rid of. Mom keeps telling me it’s okay because I have a big heart and a simple soul.

When something clicks for me, that’s it. I give it my everything.

I knew then and there that I’d give Vix the moon and stars if I could, so wanting to get married after only knowing him for a day was such a small concept in comparison.

“I’m being pushy, aren’t I?” It wasn’t an apology because I wasn’t sorry. But I could acknowledge my faults. Maybe he would know the gesture for what it was. Simple confession.

“You don’t want to marry me, Paris.
