Athena was a Greek goddess who taught mortals how

to weave yarn and thread into cloth and rope. One

day, a mortal named Arachne bragged that she could

weave better than anybody else. When Arachne took

all the credit for Athena’s skill, Athena was hurt and

disappointed. Athena challenged Arachne’s claims, and

they decided to settle it once and for all with a weaving

contest. In the contest, Athena wove pictures portraying

the Greek gods as good guys. Arachne wove pictures

that showed the gods as bad guys. This made the gods

mad! Since Arachne thought she was so good at weaving,

Athena turned her into a bug that could weave webs—

a spider!
