Charmed Justice
I dropped the Hell Stone to the ground and reached for my knives, and while I was quick, the vampires were much quicker, moving with faster-than-light speed.
“Hands up,” the closest one barked, a muscle-bound G.I. Joe type with brown hair.
“What—” I began.
“Silence,” he thundered. “Hands up. I won’t say it again.”
Right. The Charmed justice system.
Irritated, I complied, lifting my hands as the next vampire stepped forward, a female with blonde, buzzed hair and a tattoo of a beating heart on her neck. “Hands on the wall,” she demanded. Without even waiting for me to turn, she shoved me back against the wall and grabbing my shoulders, twirled me around. She was strong. There was no fighting back here. “Spread your feet,” she snapped, kicking my ankles apart.
With my palms and cheek flat against the cement, I couldn't see what had happened to Ricky or the Hell Stone. I opened my mouth to demand my rights—in the Charmed justice system, you have to fight back, forcefully—but at the clasp of handcuffs around my right wrist, my lips sealed shut on their own.
Crud. Spelled. I couldn’t even blink.
Someone began patting me down.
“What’s this?” the blonde female vampire demanded, unzipping my pocket to pull out Tabitha.
Still locked in the spell, I couldn’t answer.
“She’s in bad shape,” someone said.
“Get a medic, quick,” the muscle-bound G.I. Joe commanded.
“Let’s add an attempted murder charge to the list, shall we?” the female vampire snarled, twisting my arms behind my back to clamp the handcuffs shut.
I’d always detested the Charmed criminal justice system, but this experience was making Strix look like a Christmas elf of the most jolly and loving kind.
Unable to shake the spell, I could do nothing as they took Tabitha away. And I couldn’t demand my rights or fight against a list of charges that could grow rapidly larger.
Then, the female vampire turned me around and placing a palm between my shoulder blades, shoved me forward. “March.”
I did, feeling more like a puppet than ever before, my body obeying even as my mind screamed inside.
“You’re under arrest,” she said as we descended the stairs. “Trespassing. Attempted murder. And those aren’t anything compared to that.” She nodded her chin to the side.
I caught a glimpse of the black trash bags. The Hell Stone? I couldn’t ask what special charge she’d tacked on for that one. Still spelled, I could do nothing but march. I couldn’t even blink in code.
As we spiraled down, I drew a deep breath, relieved the spell allowed me that much control, at least. The vampires’ scents were new, clans I’d never encountered before. I could only hope that meant they hadn’t sworn allegiance to Emilio, but at this point, who knew.
At the bottom of the stairs, we entered a wide hall, filled mostly with Charmed soldiers in body armor sporting black berets, vampires, wolves, perimancers, and the witch kind. I’d never seen so many in uniform before. Had I stumbled upon a Charmed military base of some kind? An underground bunker?
Then, I was pushed into a classic interrogation room, the walls made of black, painted cinderblocks.
