Chapter 14

“Name’s Detective Dale Cooper.” She stuck out her hand towards Detective Copeland.

“Pleasure.” Detective Copeland shook her hand.

“I’m from the Pocono Police Department. Let me get straight to the point.”

The two detectives were sitting in Copeland’s office. She was seated behind her desk and her guest was seated in the guest chair in front. Copeland checked her watch—four p.m.

“Getting off soon?”

Her gaze snapped up from her watch. “No, I’m sorry. That must have seemed rude. Habit. I can’t seem to break myself out of it.”

“Cops are always on the clock, you know. Either we’re racing against time or we’re behind it. What can you do?”

“What can I help you with? You have come a long way for a conversation.”

Detective Cooper crossed her legs and leaned her elbow on the desk. “I could have called, but I needed some fresh air and maybe even a change of scenery.” She pinned Copeland with a serious gaze. “Do you like mysteries? Thrillers? True Crime?”

“I read when I have time. I find it relaxing, letting the author solve the crime, catch the murderers, and all I have to do is take it easy.” She chuckled.

“You have read Dawn Knight, right? I heard you on Wake Up With Crane this morning.”

“Oh, now I see where this is going. My question.”

“I’m leaning more toward your observation. Can I speak to you candidly, and this conversation remains between us?” Detective Cooper pointed her finger between the two of them.

“It’s your show. You did the traveling, so whatever you want.”

“The wedding band concerns me. You mentioned it this morning.”

“Yes, according to the news, nothing was missing. No robbery. But in her book, the ring is missing. I know it’s fiction, but her books bother me.”

“I agree,” Cooper said. “The one thing we did not report in the media was the missing wedding band. Coincidence? I don’t know, but it’s too convenient.”

“When I finished that book, it left me unsettled.”

“The readers love those books, and they love her, but my gut tells me something isn’t right,” Copeland said.

Cooper peered around the office. “Nice. Two partners?” She pointed towards the two desks.

“Yep.”

“Good, because I have a plan I’m hoping you can help me with.”

Copeland leaned in close, resting her elbows on the desk and her chin on top of her interlaced fingers, gaze pinned on Cooper.

They put their heads together.

“I’m not saying she had anything to do with the murder or the kidnapping—”

“Are you still considering the wife a kidnapping? She’s probably dead,” Copeland said.

“You’re probably right, but we don’t have a body. I’m thinking this woman knows something and she’s not revealing the truth because it would impact her pocket book.”

“How would she have access to the information since it was never released? I sure didn’t get wind of it.”

Cooper balled her fist and shook them once. “That’s what bothers me. The missing ring is placed so well in her book. She has to know. I don’t know how, but she knows.”

“What about his family? Maybe she interviewed them. Maybe she is claiming her book is fiction, and it’s actually true crime.
