CHAPTER 6

Down Time

ANTHONY’S had a few days to get his head around defeat. Mentally, he’s in a good place and is now just waiting for the physical issues to heal.

The atmosphere was brilliant, just gutted I couldn’t do it for the supporters. Everyone’s been saying they had a great night and that’s good to hear. Just wish I could’ve done it. I suppose just walking out in front of that crowd was a success in a way. As I thought, I’ve got a fracture to the rib. I knew there was summat up. It’s been getting better over the last 24 hours or so. It was really painful for a few days – I couldn’t drive.

I’ve been thinking about the fight and I am gutted. I’d worked so hard [that] I really believed I was going to win but I gave it everything. There’s no point in me lying and saying I could have done this or that. On the night, I lost to the better man. I could say, ‘If my ribs hadn’t gone in round four, I could’ve moved better, done this or that,’ but he hit me there and he meant to hit me there. He inflicted the damage, know what I mean? He hit me with a good shot and fractured the rib, so …

After the fight I went back to the hotel, got showered, went to see a few friends and family in a bar. I was getting hugged a lot, which was sore, and came back and had a bit of room service. I then got a few hours’ sleep, which normally doesn’t happen. I’m getting the urge to get back in the gym but I know I have to rest. When I can, I’m going to do some yoga and swimming to tick over – just to stay healthy, really. I’ve got a two-pack left – the other four have gone into hibernation!

Jorge’s been in contact with Anthony since the fight and is keen to keep in touch. He left Manchester for London and has been enjoying the capital with his wife Michelle.

I saw him in the drug testing room after the fight and he asked me if I wanted to go for some food. It was nice of him but it’s a hard thing to do when there are so many people who want to see you. Do I go and see friends and family or go out for food with a guy who’s just snotted me! Ha ha …

I did say to him that at some point I’ll be in Vegas and we’ll catch up. Our paths will cross. He’s sound.

Anthony’s not the only Crolla to have been charmed by Team Linares. While New Moston’s finest was preparing for the biggest fight of his life, his opponent was dining with his mother.

Me mam saw him Saturday morning. Jorge told me after the fight, although me mam had already told me obviously. She loves the boxing – she doesn’t like me boxing – but she loves boxing.
