I wish I could say that my stunning heroics and clever wordplay saved the day, but in the end, Xena had been right. Things had fallen out of my hands, and the best thing I could do was keep my mouth shut.

Thankfully, spite was a powerful motivator. More than wanting to get out of this without a new addition to my rap sheet, I just wanted to prove my arresting counselor wrong.

I got my phone call, and my lawyer proved why he got paid the big bucks—I was a free man within an hour.

Xena was another story. Once Maggie arrived, she had Xena free within ten minutes.

I don’t know what witchcraft Maggie pulled off to make that happen, but reports from eyewitnesses told of a gilded champion arriving with a list of political allies as long as her arm and a furious tirade about fae independence and treaties and god knows what else. I knew Maggie could be a little scary when she got mad, but I almost felt glad I hadn’t seen this—by description, she sounded like a proper nightmare.

By the time my lawyer had me out, charges against Xena had been dropped, which meant the charges against me had little to stand on. There would be a push to hit me with obstruction charges, but those would be a problem for another day, and not something my lawyer was worried about.

Better: From the sounds of it, Xena would only have a few civil penalties amongst the Fae courts.

When it was all said and done, I wanted to crash at my apartment for a day or so, but Maggie had made an offer just as good—beers at her place. I couldn’t pass that up.

“So…a changeling,” Xena repeated, sitting on the edge of Maggie’s desk, legs dangling. “I know that means I’m fae, but…can I shapeshift?”

“No.” Maggie shook her head but smiled, leaning into the couch in her shop’s waiting room. “Sorry, kid, you just get the standard fae suite.”

Tired as I was, I was content to sit back and enjoy the company, listening to them talk from a comfortable easy chair.

“But what does that mean?” Xena asked, staring at Maggie with awe. “A ‘Changeling’, so…my parents were robbed of their real baby?”

“No, nothing like that.” Maggie frowned. “That’s—humans have a lot to say about us that isn’t true. Fae, we’re all born the same, but when we hit puberty, we adapt. Live around humans, your ears stay round. Live underground, your ears get points and you get pretty great night vision and hearing. Live in a forest, well—we come in all types, is the point.”

“Oh,” Xena said, deflating slightly. “So I could’ve been way cooler?”

Maggie barked out a laugh. “I just told you you’re going to live to two hundred and have magic in your blood, and you’re disappointed?”

“Well, I mean…round ears are boring,” Xena sulked, crossing her arms over her chest.

“Get implants, then, if you want,” Maggie suggested. “But trust me, after a few decades keeping up with hat fashion, though, you’d probably come around to that being one hell of a perk.
