Russian rail torpedo ZhDT-3

Russian D-3 NKVD armored rail car. Motorized armored cars of D-3 type were developed in the USSR at the beginning of the 1930s by engineer Dyrenkov. The sloping armored hull of the car was 10–16 mm thick, and had two side doors. The commander cabin was set in the center of the vehicle on top of the roof with observation slits, and an exit hatch placed on top. Armament consisted of four Maxim machine guns, two on each side of the hull, and two 45 mm guns and DT machine guns housed in T-26 tank turrets. The D-3 was powered by a Gerkules YXC engine with capacity of 93 hp (or a Yaroslavl motor of 90 hp) placed in the center of a frame. Its gear had four speeds and a reverse device for both forward and backward movement. These armored draisines (with a crew varying between 11 and 16) were often issued to border guards and NKVD security forces. They operated independently or as scouting elements ahead of armored trains. More than 30 units were produced and a number took part in the Second World War, 1941–45.
