Sheâll come around; she just needs time, I told myself and hoped to Luna it would be true.
As I walked through the door to Cindyâs place, Secret came running down the stairs, calling my name. I scooped her up, kissed her between her fuzzy ears, and squeezed her until she squirmed. âSo glad I have you, kiddo.â I told her on release.
She gave a happy mew, hugged my thigh, and rubbed her cheeks on my waist. How could a girl who ate human hearts be so sweet? âYouâre lovey this morning.â I scratched her ears.
âYouâre sad.â She purred a bit before looking up with a pout. âAnd Iâm hungry.â
âHow âbout some tuna fish?â I asked, taking a step towards the kitchen.
She held onto my leg and her ears wilted a bit. âAbby, it's the other type of hungry.â She whispered in a hushed voice.
Hunt? Wolf me stirred from her depression as I froze. I shouldnât be surprised; sheâd used her glamor to hide me while we had hunted Andrew, and again at his funeral. Magic had costs, and Iâd been allowing Secret to use hers on my behalf. âItâs only been a few days. How hungry?â I heard myself ask.
âIt doesnât have to be right now.â Her shoulders hunched. âBut if thereâs a meanie you donât likeâ¦â
Get pup meat, wolf me growled, unbothered by the prospect of hunting a human being that wasnât a direct threat to us. The cops hadnât even hassled me after Iâd given Andrew that heart attack. Although maybe that had more to do with Reyâs protection on the house and the fact that I hadnât used my name at Andrewâs funeral than anything else. And, well, Secret had been protecting me, using that energy.
I knelt down, put my forehead against hers, and whispered. âThank you for telling me. I will find you a heart, but we have to make the next one last a little longer, alright?â
She nodded timidly, ââKay. Just hungry, not starving.â
âIâll find something for you tonight.â I hugged her, mind whirling with how the hell I was going to feed her. Would the heart of Scullyâs host have worked? Had I wasted a perfectly good heart? Or had the heart been as foul to her as his blood had been? Then I remembered I had just left the body in the graveyard and the pistol was still in my car! Criminal mastermind, I am not.
I let Secret go and called out for Cindy. Nobody answered.
âShe went to work. Rey went out.â Secret said.
âCindy left you here?!â My voice climbed high. No wonder she hadnât texted me back earlier this morning.
âI can be alone.â Secret sniffed and wandered off into the kitchen.
My throat grumbled at that as I checked my phone. There were quite a few messages. A new unknown number suggested we have a chat and claimed to be Mayor Leary. Cliff said that the NLR was critically short-handed and begged me to take another shift. Cindy, meanwhile, was up at the funeral party for a shift, citing needing money for redoing the kitchen counters.
