Faith stared at the letter in her hand. Her terrible day had gotten worse. Jasper and David were suing her for the legal fees for drafting their surrogate agreement, the initial consultations with the fertility doctors, and damages.

In the surrogacy agreement, she’d been bound after implantation, and she’d had no intention of changing her mind, despite her worries. The pregnancy had just happened. Should she call David and try to reason with him? Try again to explain? When they’d learned she was pregnant, it had been such a crazy time for her emotionally, she wasn’t sure she’d explained much. She’d been trying to come to terms with it herself.

A call to her lawyer would complicate matters and add to the expense. The lawyers’ and the doctors’ fees summed over five thousand dollars, and though it stressed her out, she’d take responsibility for that. She could make payments to David and Jasper, apologize, and hope they’d understand and forgive her. But ten thousand dollars in damages? That crossed the line into ridiculous. She could’ve backed out at any point before implantation without being sued. They were doing this to hurt her. They knew she had no money to fight back with.

She couldn’t call Ethan now. They’d had a fight over Addison. Addison, the beautiful siren Ethan couldn’t stay away from, who’d had her hands all over Ethan, leaning into him, tilting her head up, gazing into his eyes, pouting her lips, silently begging him to kiss her. He’d been just as bad, standing there, letting her touch him, and staring into her eyes. As much as Faith tried, she couldn’t purge that image from her mind.

She needed someone to talk to. If she called her brother, he’d start up again about Ethan and his doubts and concerns about Ethan’s family and their wealth. His family had money, but she still needed to handle this herself and she was perfectly capable of doing so. She’d be better off asking David about this directly, seeing if they could resolve this before it blew up bigger.

With shaking hands, she dialed David. He answered on the third ring. Had he debated answering at all? “I received your letter. You’re suing me?” She’d meant to sound calm, but the words rushed out fast and shrill.

David cleared his throat. “We’re not supposed to be talking on the phone. You need to have your lawyer call ours.”

With that one statement, she knew David wasn’t the one pushing for this. This had Jasper’s name all over it. “This is crazy. I didn’t intentionally get pregnant. I didn’t mean for this to happen. I didn’t want you to get hurt.”

A long pause. “Yet you did hurt me, and it happened after we’d talked about you being a surrogate for us. It would be different if this happened before. You told me you weren’t in a relationship. Are you going around having random sex with strangers in bars? Do you even know who the father is? I never knew you to be so wild.
