Faith stared at the letter in her hand. Her terrible day had gotten worse. Jasper and David were suing her for the legal fees for drafting their surrogate agreement, the initial consultations with the fertility doctors, and damages.
In the surrogacy agreement, sheâd been bound after implantation, and sheâd had no intention of changing her mind, despite her worries. The pregnancy had just happened. Should she call David and try to reason with him? Try again to explain? When theyâd learned she was pregnant, it had been such a crazy time for her emotionally, she wasnât sure sheâd explained much. Sheâd been trying to come to terms with it herself.
A call to her lawyer would complicate matters and add to the expense. The lawyersâ and the doctorsâ fees summed over five thousand dollars, and though it stressed her out, sheâd take responsibility for that. She could make payments to David and Jasper, apologize, and hope theyâd understand and forgive her. But ten thousand dollars in damages? That crossed the line into ridiculous. She couldâve backed out at any point before implantation without being sued. They were doing this to hurt her. They knew she had no money to fight back with.
She couldnât call Ethan now. Theyâd had a fight over Addison. Addison, the beautiful siren Ethan couldnât stay away from, whoâd had her hands all over Ethan, leaning into him, tilting her head up, gazing into his eyes, pouting her lips, silently begging him to kiss her. Heâd been just as bad, standing there, letting her touch him, and staring into her eyes. As much as Faith tried, she couldnât purge that image from her mind.
She needed someone to talk to. If she called her brother, heâd start up again about Ethan and his doubts and concerns about Ethanâs family and their wealth. His family had money, but she still needed to handle this herself and she was perfectly capable of doing so. Sheâd be better off asking David about this directly, seeing if they could resolve this before it blew up bigger.
With shaking hands, she dialed David. He answered on the third ring. Had he debated answering at all? âI received your letter. Youâre suing me?â Sheâd meant to sound calm, but the words rushed out fast and shrill.
David cleared his throat. âWeâre not supposed to be talking on the phone. You need to have your lawyer call ours.â
With that one statement, she knew David wasnât the one pushing for this. This had Jasperâs name all over it. âThis is crazy. I didnât intentionally get pregnant. I didnât mean for this to happen. I didnât want you to get hurt.â
A long pause. âYet you did hurt me, and it happened after weâd talked about you being a surrogate for us. It would be different if this happened before. You told me you werenât in a relationship. Are you going around having random sex with strangers in bars? Do you even know who the father is? I never knew you to be so wild.
