The wind was the first thing Tilly noticed, whispering ‘Comeuppance’ to retrieve her glass baton. She had no idea if she’d need it, but decided to be led by her intuition. If subtle distinctions were going to make the difference, she had to work out what these were and pure thought was the only trick she’d learnt to help with this.

It was pure thought that had saved her in Sorelel’s Circle, deciding to activate the dead drop when suspended spirits appeared, freaking Katie out while Tilly’s focus intensified. Everything was a simulation, she knew, even when real dangers presented themselves. The S.P.M.A. was a Society of peace, after all, meaning the spilling of innocent blood wasn’t the aim.

Failure could come in many forms, Tilly realised, some more painful than others, so as the wind swirled, looking like a tornado ready to wreak havoc, she uttered ‘Exhibius’, studying the flecks of gold pouring out her glass baton, forming a familiar mask that hovered in front of her.

This time, Tilly used the Fixilia charm to stop the mask attaching itself to her face, understanding that escaping to a different realm wasn’t an option. Their Quivvens would provide an exit in time, but first they had to survive the weight of the wind, beginning to cast a spell over her as she walked, struggling to put one foot in front of the other … fighting fatigue as the first vision appeared … of a shadow waving her on.

“It’s not real,” Tilly whispered, deciding to navigate left, forcing herself forward as she struggled to keep her eyes open, before deciding to let them close.

The Quivven offered the gift of blind sight, Tilly wondering if fighting against the hypnotic atmosphere was the first mistake. It was obvious it was as her energy levels returned instantly, the glowing vision floating in her mind’s eye offering a course of travel she followed, the Quivven spinning under her skin as it guided her on.

Saraseai Lake could be near or far, she knew, deciding not to ponder distance or time. Many more illusions would appear, the whistling wind doing its best to drag her in the direction of its choice … but the golden mask was her second navigation tool … remaining close to her face as it hovered in the wilderness … unaffected by the strange wind that whispered its hypnotic tones.

Tilly caught sight of Ethan nearby, deciding to use the flight charm to move more quickly. It was a mistake, Tilly sensed, the sight of Ethan’s body dragged into the vortex of wind sending a shiver of fear running through her. She couldn’t go to his aid, though, having to focus on her own journey as Ava appeared to her right, surrounded by a protective layer of water.

Ava had decided the power of water could offer two things: a power equal to the wind and protection from the faint whispers … whispers forcing Leah to her knees with Olin appearing to help her back to her feet.
