4. Influences on the Story

4.1 Places in Midgard and Places in Middle-Earth

The most conspicuous relation between Middle-Earth and Midgard are these two names. Tolkien wrote in a letter that Middle-Earth “is just a use of Middle English middel-erde (or erthe), altered from Old English Middangeard”[30] In Norse mythology Midgard is the world of men, with its highest level Asgard, where the gods are at home and its lowest level called Niflheim, a world of death and the dead. The connection between Asgard and Midgard is Bifröst, the rainbow bridge, built by the gods.[31] As Day suggest, Asgard and its inhabitants, the Æsir and the Light Elves, can be seen as a parallel to the Undying Lands of Tolkien’s elves. Asgard can only be reached by Bifröst, whereas the Undying Lands can only be reached by elves and later on chosen people, like Frodo, trough their magical ships. He also suggests that Niflheim is “not dissimilar to Melkor’s Middle-earth during the Ages of Darkness.”[32] The far simpler connection would be that, the land of shadow, darkness and evil, Mordor is the equivalent of Niflheim. So it is not a changed Middle-Earth in darkness but a place in Middle-Earth, just like Niflheim in Midgard.
