VINCENT LOOKED UP from the two-year-old copy of Playboy opened in front of him on the bar, expecting to see a customer. The cantina’s half doors swung a little, but there was no one there.

The wind. It must have been the wind.

Vincent reached for his beer and saw the beaded curtain connecting the cantina with the hotel move, as if someone had ducked his head through, then pulled it back again.

He went to the curtain and looked through, looking for one of the girls, probably Juanita down to scout his ashtray for roaches to get high. The hotel lobby, lighted by the single dim lamp on the registration desk, was deserted. There had been only one customer that night, a cowboy who had gone upstairs with Simone and left afterward.

Vincent absently scratched his dreadlocks and returned to the cantina, looking slowly around, certain that he was not alone but unable to find anything to substantiate the impression.

“Voodoo,” he muttered, crossing himself.

Or maybe it was the ganja. He’d never smoked much before coming to Paradisio, where there wasn’t anything better to do with his head. Maybe he ought to lay off it awhile. The weed of wisdom was making him paranoid.

Simone lay on her back in bed in the darkness, feeling a little sad, the way she always did after a customer finished and left her alone. She thought about the money locked in the metal box beneath her underwear in the drawer, counting it in her head. Almost enough to leave Paradisio. Maybe she’d go to Miami, where she had a cousin in Little Havana.

Footsteps came down the hall and stopped outside her door. A key turned in the outside lock.

Vincent.

He didn’t pay for sex, but at least she wouldn’t have to be alone. She threw back the single sheet covering her body, slid to one side of the wet spot, and spread her legs. Vincent liked her that way—pretending to want it.

The door opened and closed. He came into the room so quickly that Simone didn’t actually see him. He stood next to the bed looking down at her, a mute silhouette in the darkness. Simone could feel the hot waves of desire rolling off him, infecting her with a longing she had not known since she’d started selling her body.

“Fuck me hard—really hard,” Simone said.

She heard the breath catch in his throat. It turned him on to hear her talk that way. He leaned forward to touch her shoulder, the light of the full moon that came through her one window falling across his face.

It was not Vincent.
