Chapter Fifteen

As I stood after lunch, my leg (and other parts) still warm from Jude’s teasing, the extra watch bumped against my side and I remembered what I had meant to discuss with them. “Wait,” I said. I pulled the watch from my pocket, and placed it on the table. “One of you misplaced this. I found it in Philip’s study.”

Jude patted his waistcoat, and frowned. “Not mine.” He looked at Myles.

“Mine’s upstairs,” Myles said. “I know it is.”

“It can’t be,” I said. “You must have dropped it somewhere. One of the servants brought it into the study while I was there. When did you have it last?”

“I tell you, it’s upstairs,” Myles said. “I saw it this morning.”

“Well, obviously it isn’t,” Jude said, with an anxious glance at the clock, “or it wouldn’t be here on the table. Just admit that you were careless, Myles. It’s not a crime. No-one’s going to think worse of you if –”

“And I tell you that it’s not mine!” Myles strode toward the table, snatched up the watch and shoved it into his pocket without even looking at it. “But if the pair of you don’t believe me, I’ll take it.” He stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
