Chapter Ten

Tamina made it through the rest of the day without incident and she found herself dreading the final bell. She hadn’t checked her phone since last night and considering how she’d left things. Mom would be worried and Sidney…she didn’t want to think about Sidney. She didn’t want to think about anything to do with her family, which was coming apart at the seams. She honestly couldn’t tell whether or not it’s falling apart was a good thing. What she’d ruined with Sidney, that most definitely wasn’t.

Trying to decide where she was supposed to go as she walked out of the school side by side with Cat was proving to be a nightmare. Her mom was the obvious choice, she’d texted her the hotel she was staying at, but Tamina still didn’t want to spend any more time around Vibration than she had to. Going to Mitchel sure as hell wasn’t happening. That left Sidney and a pit in her stomach. What had he thought when he realized her borrowed bedroom was empty? Had he been scared or relieved?

Her insides were so busy trying to twist themselves into a pretzel about where she was supposed to go that she almost missed Abby standing at the edge of the parking lot, a backpack slung over her shoulder, and that creepy ass smile plastered across her face.

“What’s she doing here?” Cat asked. “I thought she was supposed to be with Nicole and Kristin at the Pocket.”

“Better go find out,” Tamina said, and hurried over, dragging Cat along in her wake.

“Hi, Tamina,” Abby said, holding up the basket. “I brought you something.”

“Thanks, Abby,” Tamina said. “Is Nicole with you?”

“No.” Abby’s grin fell, then lit up again. “But I’m here! Come on, we’ve got to go into the woods.”

“Uh, why?” Tamina asked. Where was Nicole? Abby was too dangerous to be out without some kind of supervision. Especially when they knew for certain that there were Eclipse mercenaries in the area. If Vibration and Cavefish were around, then that other team Nicole had told them about probably was as well.

“So I can give you your present, of course,” Abby said, indicating her backpack.

Tamina looked over to Cat, but her friend had that distant look on her face that indicated she was using her super power and totally checked out. Whatever it was, it had to be important for her to do that so close to the school, and with Abby right in front of them.

“Sure,” Tamina said, hesitantly, “how far into the woods do we need to go?”

Cat’s phone started ringing. Tamina gave her friend another once over. She was really out of it. “Okay, just a second. Let me get Cat out of sight.” Her friend moved her feet automatically when Tamina pulled on her hand and tugged her around behind some trees. She and Abby wouldn’t go more than a few yards away at most, and oblivious as Cat seemed, she wasn’t totally out of it. If anything serious happened she’d snap out of her trance thingy right away.
