Where was Menaka? Busy with her morning chores, presumably. Vishwamitra made a mental note of expanding his ashram. He should have more disciples, more attendants so that he could teach and she could have some help. But the thought of having strangers in his paradise daunted him. No, life was perfect here with just him and her. She was not in the hut. Must have gone for her daily evening swim, he thought. She never missed it.
‘Me-na-ka!’ he called, spacing the syllables with an unrestrained urgency, suddenly scared that she might have left or been taken away.
There’s nothing discreditable about jealousy, thought Vishwamitra as he spotted Menaka finning in the river with all sinuous grace. He considered jealousy as the mark of true love. But he prided himself for not being a jealous man. He had never felt threatened, possibly because he always had everything. He was everyone’s envy. He never nursed a jealous thought, till he met Menaka. He was either tortured by the fear of Vasu’s memories or Indra’s possessiveness. He believed her completely, but dreaded he would lose her to one of them one day.
The water looked welcoming. Soon, he was in the water with her. She certainly could swim. He went in after her, but he saw it was hopeless to attempt to catch up with Menaka. After a while, she turned around and came back, almost as fast as she had gone out.
She circled around him, her face wet and glistening. ‘This is one thing I am better at than you!’ she grinned victoriously.
He turned on his back and stared up at the big moon. The water was warm, but he wasn’t in the mood to appreciate it. He was impatient for her to finish her swim and come out or else he wanted to make love to her right now in the water. As if reading his mind, she teasingly swam away from him, came back and then slithered beside him, her body slippery, her hands at his thighs, her lips deliciously wet on his, her tongue moving over his face, his ear, into his mouth, which had gone suddenly dry. She was touching him everywhere, her silky hair swirling, blinding him; he thought his heart would explode. He heard himself groaning as she pushed him under water, their wet skins stuck together. But he knew her body well, his hands grasping her waist, thrusting himself deep inside her, waves of ecstasy crashing on him. Outside, the water laved gently around them and sometime later, they came out of the water, gasping, their bodies still entwined, drifting in the warm water. They stayed afloat in satiated silence, their fingers touching, enjoying the water, enjoying while staring at the stars above in the inky, cloudless sky.
‘You are fascinated by the stars aren’t you?’ she murmured. ‘The universe, the constellations, astronomy—that’s why you could create a galaxy…’
‘I discovered more than created!’ he laughed lightly. ‘All Man has to do is search Nature and he’ll find Deva everywhere.
