“Would you like to go out to dinner tonight, Jordy?”

She looked up. “Are you trying to tell me you’re tired of my cooking?”

He laughed. “I love your cooking. It’s almost as good as mine.”

He had surprised her by being an excellent cook. The years on the road when he had been forced to eat in restaurants had taught him the value of learning how to cook for himself.

Jordan thought about the sameness of the menu at Will’s diner, and the many times she wished she had more room in her cramped apartment kitchen to try some special meals.

“I’d really rather eat here, Clint. I thought I’d make you my famous spaghetti sauce tonight.”

He gave her the lazy smile that never failed to excite her. “I was hoping you’d say that. I’d much rather share a simple meal with you here than drive into town to a restaurant.”

“I’d better check the supplies. I may need a few things from town.”

“I have to drive in for some things anyway. Give me a list.”

Jordan checked the kitchen cupboards, then jotted down the items she needed from the store.

Clint pulled on his jacket. “Sure you don’t want to come with me?” A mysterious smile played about his lips. He was planning a secret.

She decided to indulge him. “No. I’ll start the sauce while you’re gone.”

He kissed her firmly on the lips. “Do you realize this is the first time I’ve left you since you came here?”

“See that you don’t leave me alone too long.” She returned the kiss.

Standing in the doorway, she waved until he was out of sight.

Jordan got busy in the kitchen, adding all her secret ingredients to the iron skillet, seasoning, tasting, until the wonderful spicy aroma of spaghetti sauce filled the house.

She heard the slam of a car door, and hurried to open the front door for Clint. She stopped. She didn’t recognize the car. And then a familiar figure strode briskly up the steps, and hesitated, staring at her as if seeing a ghost.

“Danny!”

His face lit with a smile.

“Jordy! Is it really you?”

They rushed together in a warm hug.

He held her a little away from him.

“My Lord. It isn’t possible. You haven’t changed at all.”

She studied the friendly open face, so like Clint’s. The same dark hair spilled in disarray about his forehead. His dark eyes were warm and friendly, his shoulders broad, and there was a slight thickening about his middle.

Danny was the oldest of the four brothers. And next to Clint, her favorite. He had always seemed like the father she had lost. He was gentle, simple and direct.

During his vacations from college, when he was at the farm, Jordan used to tag along after him, badgering him with a million questions. He never showed any impatience with her. And sometimes, as a special treat, he would allow her to hold a bird or animal while he tended its wounds. It was to this gentle man she had confided her fears, and on a rare occasion, her dreams.
