She was on a beach, the same one she had been on in her other dreams. Only something was different this time. She looked down at the ground.

Oh, I’m taller.

A teenage boy was running in the water and laughing. “You coming, you big baby, or is it too cold for your California blood?”

Not one to turn down a challenge, Katie raced to run into the water. And cold it was, but it was also refreshing until the boy pulled her under the water. She returned the favor by tackling him back. They played in the water for a while, and Katie thought this dream wasn’t much different than her others, except for their age.

But then the dream changed. She and the boy were each laying on their beach towels, looking up at the sky.

Katie stole a peek at him though, and she gasped. It was Zack; the little boy from her other dreams was now a teenager. She recognized his freckles and messy hair, even if it was on a taller body. But it was also the Zack she had spent the evening with in her real life, just much younger.

Was her subconscious projecting into her dreams again and she was just dreaming of them together because of their date?

“I can’t believe you’re leaving tomorrow. This summer went by too fast,” teenage dream Zack whined.

The dream version of herself also felt sad, because she would return to California and not see him until next year. If that happened at all.

“I think my dad might sell the beach house. His business took a downturn, and they need the money to help pay for my college.”

Zack sat up at that and gave her a worried expression. “You’d still find a way to come here, though, wouldn’t you, Kat?’

Of course, she would, although she didn’t know how. She supposed she could get a summer job to help save for college too. She had to work it out. Katie didn’t want next summer to pass without seeing Zack. He was her best friend.

“We’ll see . . .” She didn’t want to make any promises that she couldn’t keep.

Zack surprised her reaching out and gently cupping her face with his hands.

“Kat . . . can I . . . kiss you?”

Katie was blown away. Not only did the boy she had a secret crush on want to kiss her, but he was also being so sweet about it and asking first. Numbly, she nodded, and their lips met. It was soft and sweet, with the waves gently lapping at the shores of Mackinac Island as their soundtrack.
