Revolutionary Cartoonists
As it turns out, most of us graphic artists who established our reputation by painting political posters during the electoral period of the Republic, the revolution and the Spanish Civil War had come from the field of commercial advertising. In Bartolí’s words, we were nothing more than “milquetoast revolutionaries”. The hard-core revolutionaries, those who had cut their revolutionary teeth in the editorial departments of weekly left-wing newspapers and at the barricades during the bourgeois oppression, were cartoonists such as Shum, Benigani and Bartolí himself. They did not share our passion for painting posters, even though they had all proved themselves to be fine poster artists. The artists who regularly contributed to Papitu and L’Esquella de la Torratxa weeklies before the July revolution decided to appropriate the editorial offices and, with approval from other members of the SDP Revolutionary Committee, revive the papers. The re-launch of Francesc Pujols’ Papitu was especially significant. It had formerly been Catalonia’s most popular weekly and had since become quite outrageous, targeted at a barbershop’s clientele. Its one redeeming feature was that it published sophisticated female drawings by Federico Ribas and Fernando Bosch, which were comparable to the extraordinary ‘Penagos woman’. Of course, in light of today’s attitudes to sexuality, the paper would seem tame and quaint.
First issue of the humorous weekly Papitu, published by the SDP, 10 November 1936.
