The pain medication makes me drowsy and I nod off, when I wake up again momma is gone. A nurse comes in and starts an I.V. and hands me a device about the size of an ink pen with a button on the end. She hands me the device and tells me it’s to administer morphine into my system anytime I feel pain. Once she leaves, I push the button repeatedly until I nod off again.

When I awake this time I see a get well card on my night stand with a vase filled with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The get well card is from Smokey’s family. There is also a picture of Smokey and me when we won the Semi-state championship in High school. Smokey and I were on fire that night, we both had a 20 plus point game to defeat our cross town rivals by 2 points. Smokey had hit a 25 foot buzzer beater after I threw him a half court pass from behind my back driving the crowd into frenzy. Momma and Smokey’s momma fought their way through the crowd and I remember momma pushing Dee Dee out the way. Reliving the joy and thrill of that night makes me smile through my tears.

When I wake up again, Billy Ray is standing over me.

You’re late, what happened? I whisper painfully

“I got caught by a train, but you knew I was coming”.

“Yea you better cause we all we got!”

Billy Ray relives the afternoon of the shooting two months ago. He tells me how they just happen to ride up and save the day that afternoon. Billy Ray and I make eye contact and stare at one another for a few minutes in silence. His eyes tell me everything I need to know. The tears forming up in his eyes tells me of the sorrow he feels regarding this tragedy. “We gonna get em, trust me!”
