Emilio watched the girls finish off the shared MRE. “Give that meal a little time. Your digestive system needs to come back online. It shuts down after three days with no food. We’ve got plenty more when you feel like you’re ready. Hopefully, you’ll start to get your strength back shortly.”

“I’m stuffed. That was so good,” said Violet. “Thank you.”

Harper took another drink from Emilio’s canteen and handed it back to him. “I appreciate it.”

“I’m happy we could help.” Emilio placed the canteen back into its holder. “We should start moving.”

“I’m rested. I think I can at least jog for a while,” said Violet.

“Okay, we’ll start with a brisk walk for a couple of blocks.” Emilio jumped off the porch and signaled for the others to follow him. We need to keep some gas in the tank in case we get into a tight spot and have to run flat out.”

Hudson scanned the sky for the helicopter. “I don’t hear anything.”

“They’re probably looking west and north. Once they don’t find anything, they’ll start flying concentric circles around the place where we ditched the vehicle.” Emilio looked up over his shoulder.

“If they only have one helicopter, they’ll have to split the time between looking for us and Click’s team,” said Annalee.

Emilio set a brisk pace for the group. “A Black Hawk can go over 200 miles per hour. Norfolk is only a hundred miles away. They can have more choppers here in thirty minutes. That’s why it’s imperative that we get as far away from the center of the search grid as we can.”
